Abstract-HTTP-based live streaming has become increasingly popular in recent years, and more users have started generating 4K live streams from their devices (e.g., mobile phones) through social-media service providers like Facebook or YouTube. If the audience is located far from a live stream source across the global Internet, TCP throughput becomes substantially suboptimal due to slow-start and congestion control mechanisms. This is especially the case when the end-to-end content delivery path involves radio access network (RAN) at the last mile. As a result, the data rate perceived by a mobile receiver may not meet the high requirement of 4K video streams, which causes deteriorated Quality-of-Experience (QoE). In this paper, we propose a scheme named Edge-based Transient Holding of Live sEgment (ETHLE), which addresses the issue above by performing context-aware transient holding of video segments at the mobile edge with virtualized content caching capability. Through holding the minimum number of live video segments at the mobile edge cache in a context-aware manner, the ETHLE scheme is able to achieve seamless 4K live streaming experiences across the global Internet by eliminating buffering and substantially reducing initial startup delay and live stream latency. It has been deployed as a virtual network function at an LTE-A network, and its performance has been evaluated using real live stream sources that are distributed around the world. The significance of this paper is that by leveraging virtualized caching resources at the mobile edge, we address the conventional transport-layer bottleneck and enable QoE-assured Internet-wide live streaming services with high data rate requirements.Index Terms-HTTP live streaming, mobile edge computing, network function virtualization, quality of experience, video caching

We study the problem of transmitting scalable video coded streams in a hybrid scenario including a global cellular network and a local peer-to-peer network. Given desirable channel condition in cellular downlink, some cellular user equipments can fetch the video chunks via the cellular base station directly, and also provide relay service via the local peer-to-peer network for other user equipments unable to meet their basic video quality. To take the advantage of channel diversity gains, the method of random linear coding is adopted to generate linear combinations of the video chunks for transmission in both the cellular and peer-to-peer networks. To optimize the cellular and peer-to-peer transmission arrangement, we first formulate it as a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem, which becomes more complicated when the number of user equipments increases. Then, we convert it to a quasi-convex optimization problem by approximating the indicator function with a continuous step function, and it can be solved by a centralized approach. Furthermore, a primal-dual decomposition approach is developed and a distributed algorithm is proposed accordingly. Simulation results show that the proposed approach achieves a near-optimal solution.

Dynamic 1 Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) is a popular over-the-top video content distribution technique that adapts the streaming session according to the user's network condition typically in terms of downlink bandwidth. This video quality adaptation can be achieved by scaling the frame quality, spatial resolution or frame rate. Despite the flexibility on the video quality scaling methods, each of these quality scaling dimensions has varying effects on the Quality of Experience (QoE) for end users. Furthermore, in video streaming, the changes in motion over time along with the scaling method employed have an influence on QoE, hence the need to carefully tailor scaling methods to suit streaming applications and content type. In this work, we investigate an intelligent DASH approach for the latest video coding standard H.265 and propose a heuristic QoE-aware cost-efficient adaptation scheme that does not switch unnecessarily to the highest quality level but rather stays temporarily at an intermediate quality level in certain streaming scenarios. Such an approach achieves a comparable and consistent level of quality under impaired network conditions as commonly found in Internet and mobile networks whilst reducing bandwidth requirements and quality switching overhead. The rationale is based on our empirical experiments, which show that an increase in bitrate does not necessarily mean noticeable improvement in QoE. Furthermore, our work demonstrates that the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and the spatial resolution scalability types are the best fit for our proposed algorithm. Finally, we demonstrate an innovative interaction between quality scaling methods and the polarity of switching operations. The proposed QoE-aware scheme is implemented and empirical results show that it is able to reduce bandwidth requirements by up to 41% whilst achieving equivalent QoE compared with a representative DASH reference implementation.
