Background: HPV vaccination of both girls and boys can protect against infection and eliminate the risk for HPV-associated cancer. Due to a common misconception that the virus only poses risks to women, vaccine coverage is suboptimal among men in many countries. It is urgent to identify barriers to vaccination of boys and men. Methods: We conducted a narrative review of publications examining attitudes and beliefs regarding HPV vaccination for boys and young men. The electronic databases searched were PubMed, PsychInfo and Scopus (December 2020; last update July 2021). A total of 103 original articles were included in the final analysis. Results: The central barriers against vaccination of boys and men are: (1) lack of knowledge, (2) vaccine hesitancy in general, (3) lack of recommendation from and/or discussions with healthcare providers, (4) cost and logistics, and (5) the idea that HPV vaccination may promote promiscuity. Men who have sex with men and families belonging to ethnic minorities express a need for information tailored to their situation. Conclusions: Boys should be included in national immunization programs and men should also be offered catch-up vaccinations. Future studies should focus on addressing vaccine hesitancy and developing interventions to promote pan-gender HPV vaccination.

IntroductionVaccine hesitancy may increase infectious disease burden and impede disease control efforts, while few studies have measured such a phenomenon with a standardized tool in China. This study aimed to test the validation of the Vaccine Hesitancy Scale (VHS) developed by the WHO SAGE Working Group among caregivers and examine demographic characteristics associated with caregiver hesitancy in six provinces of China.MethodsUsing a multistage sampling design, this study was conducted in 36 immunization clinics in six provinces from December 2019 to August 2020. Caregivers of children aged 0–3 years were included. The VHS was used to assess vaccine hesitancy. The construct validity and internal consistency of the scale were assessed. Associations between caregivers’ characteristics and vaccine hesitancy were examined by simple and multiple linear regression models.ResultsOf the 3,359 participants included, a two-factor structure within the scale was identified, consisting of “lack of confidence” (1.89 ± 0.53) and “risks” (3.20 ± 0.75). Caregivers engaged in medical work expressed more confidence and were less concerned about risks compared to those of non-medical staff (p < 0.05). Participants with higher income levels were more confident (p < 0.05), while those surveyed after the COVID-19 pandemic, who were mothers, who had an older child, or who were raising a second or above birth child, had less concern about risks (p < 0.05).DiscussionWe found that the VHS had acceptable reliability and construct validity and caregivers’ hesitancy was driven more by concerns about risks than by the lack of confidence. Countering these concerns will be particularly important among non-medical staff, lower income, child’s fathers, having a younger child, or raising first-birth child groups.

This review article assesses the factors influencing the acceptance o f the HPV vaccine among adolescents and young adults, with a special focus on the contributions of nurses. HPV is a significant public health concern that can have serious health consequences, such as cervical cancer, genital warts, and other complications. However, vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of these diseases. The aim of the review was to investigate the factors influencing the acceptance of the HPV vaccine among adolescents and young adults, with a emphasis on the contribution of healthcare professionals. The analysis of studies' results indicates the complexity of factors influencing the decision to receive the HPV vaccination. Nurses have an unequivocal contribution in educating and supporting adolescents and their parents. Studies have shown that nurses are often the most important source of information about HPV vaccination, which contributes to increased awareness and positive attitudes towards vaccination. Furthermore, parents, friends, and social networks also have a significant influence on adolescents' vaccination decisions. Social networks also contribute to shaping attitudes about HPV vaccination, with positive and negative content having different effects. Public campaigns and health education are also specific factors in increasing awareness and acceptance of HPV vaccination. Studies have shown that the selection of appropriate health education methods is crucial for success in raising awareness and acceptance of vaccination. These results suggest that effective campaigns and educational programs are essential for vaccination promotion. Understanding the factors influencing the acceptance of the HPV vaccine among adolescents and young adults requires a comprehensive approach that involves nurses, parents, friends, social networks, and public campaigns. Only through collective efforts can we achieve an increase in vaccination rates, which is crucial for protecting the health of young people from HPV infection and its serious consequences.
