Background: Understanding the importance, value and self-image that the smile represents in the daily life of the individual remains a subject of high scientific interest. Aim: The present qualitative and exploratory study aims at understanding the importance of the self-perception of the mouth and smile on the mental representation of self-image and the well-being of the individual. Materials and Methods: The convenience sample consisted of 151 children and youngsters of both genders, ages 8-24 years, who used an orthodontic appliance and were invited to draw two portraits of their mouth/smile. Results: The results suggest differences in the mental representation of the mouth and the smile, namely in the investment of the drawings before and after the use of the orthodontic appliance, as well as in the expressiveness and manifestation of emotions. Discussion and Conclusions: The results suggest that the main reason that leads participants to the treatment is related to aesthetic and functional issues in which the maximizing of the mental representation of the Orthodontic Smile emerges as a new categorization of the perfect smile.

To evaluate the perception of ten commandments of the smile esthetics among dental practioners and other professionals.The study population consisted of 540 samples (GroupI: 260 dental practitioners and Group II: 280 other professionals). A web based survey was conducted using google forms. Questionnaire was prepared including all the 10 variables determining smile esthetics using various smile photograph. Each questions has 4 options (A- ideal smile esthetics, B- mild deviation from ideal smile esthetics, C - moderate deviation and D- Marked deviation).The participants were asked to select the most attractive smile (the best options) for each of the ten variables that determines the smile esthetics. The rate the attractiveness of different smile variables were assessed by two group of the study population.Option A received the highest no: of responses for all the components of smile esthetics by both the dental and other professionals except the sixth and eighth smile component (gingival exposure and midline) where more responses received towards mild deviation from ideal by the other professional than the dental professional. There is no significant difference between the smile esthetic perception betwen the dental professionals and the other professionals. Orthodontist should pay more attention to improve smile esthetics in coordination with other dental speciality in addition to the correction of malocclusion

Acceptable deviation of labial tubercle and anterior tooth midlines relative to facial midline in smile aesthetics: A retrospective observational study

Smile aesthetics are mainly influenced by the relative position of facial midline (FC-line), anterior tooth midline (AT-line) and labial tubercle midline (LT-line). However, the acceptable deviation of LT-line and AT-line relative to FC-line is unknown. This study aims to fill the critical gap. We adopted the method of cross-sectional study, the frontal full-face smile photographs of 1 subject set (1 male) were enrolled. Taking the FC-line as the center line, twelve images with 1-mm increment relative to FC-line (right or left deviation, the maximum deviation distance was 3-mm) in LT-line deviation model or LT + AT-line deviation model (LT-line coincided with AT-line basing on LT-line deviation model) were produced. Basing on Q-sort assessment, the images were evaluated by 160 dentists, 165 orthodontic patients and 163 freshmen. And the collected Q-sort scores were subjected to nonparametric comparative analysis using SPSS 18.0. There were significant differences in Q-sort scores among different groups ( P < .01). When the deviation distance was 1 mm in dentist and orthodontic patient or 2 mm in freshman group, there was no significant difference in smile attractiveness scores between the LT line deviation model and the LT + AT line deviation model ( P > .05). We also found that the score of male dentist significantly higher than female dentist ( P < .05). However, the scores of right deviation in dentists and orthodontic patients were significantly lower than those in left deviation ( P < .05). The acceptable deviation of LT-line and AT-line relative to FC-line should be kept within 2 mm. Besides, raters’ occupation and gender, and deviation direction of model may influence the smile aesthetics.
