“…A second experiment showed that (1) the higher the alternation rate of a sequence, p(a), the more likely it is to be attributed to a chance mechanism, and (2) the lower the alternation rate of a sequence, the more likely it is to be attributed to skilled human performance. Further support for these findings has been provided by Burns and Corpus (2004), who showed that when the generating mechanism of a sequence is believed to be less random, participants tend to expect the sequence to continue in a similar manner, and by Tyszka, Zielonka, Dacey, and Sawicki (2008), who showed that people tend to expect more alternations when they believe a sequence is generated by random devices such as a coin or a fortune teller.
