Introduction The conditions of Brazilian penitentiaries are known to be affected by overcrowding and precarious cells. Violence inside the prison impacts the mental and general health of individuals in this environment, whether prisoners whether workers. Thus, an increase in cases of common mental disorders is expected among workers, which contributes for their absenteeism. Objective To assess the prevalence of common mental disorders among prison workers in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Methods A prison unit was selected for the administration of the Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20 and a questionnaire to assess the sociodemographic profile of employees. The questionnaires were filled out in electronic format and made available on computers in the selected unit. Two visits were made to the unit to assess the work environment and to listen workers’ reports. Results Fifty-three questionnaires were selected, of which 50 were included in the research. According to the Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20, 34% of participants had positive results for CMD. The use of psychotropic drugs and less family support were statistically correlated with common mental disorders. The apparently small number of employees in the unit was considered a more harmful factor to work than personal contact with prisoners. Conclusions Although high, the prevalence of common mental disorders was lower than that described in the literature. The implementation of mental care programs for state civil servants would be essential to reduce the prevalence and absenteeism due to common mental disorders.

O trabalho dos agentes penitenciários é altamente estressante, pois possui entre outras preocupações: rebeliões, tentativas de fuga, tentativas de agressões, ameaças de morte dentro e fora das unidades prisionais. Desta forma, elencou-se a questão problema: A prática da atividade física pode diminuir os níveis de estresse em agentes penitenciários? Essa preocupação, muitas vezes, estende-se aos familiares, o que gera um alto nível de estresse. Portanto, o objetivo desta pesquisa foi correlacionar o nível de estresse de agentes penitenciários com os níveis de atividades físicas. Para a metodologia utilizou-se uma pesquisa descritiva de análise quantiqualitativa. A amostra abrangeu 64 agentes penitenciários. Os instrumentos de medidas utilizados foram; o Questionário Internacional de Atividade Física, versão curta (IPAQ), utilizado para avaliar o nível de atividade física e para a avaliação do nível de estresse, utilizou-se o Inventário de Sintomas de Estresse para adultos de LIPP (ISSL). O resultado da pesquisa, apontou que 25% dos agentes são sedentários, 25% estão no nível de irregularmente ativos, 30% ativos e 20% muito ativos. Em relação ao estresse, 58% estavam sem estresse e 42% foram diagnosticados com estresse, sendo que desses 42%, 7% estavam na fase de exaustão, 11% na fase de quase exaustão, 78% na fase de resistência e 4% na fase de alerta. Na análise de correlação entre atividade física e estresse, não foi encontrada associação (P=0,28 e rho= - 0,14). A pesquisa indica que os agentes penitenciários do presídio Edvan Mariano Rosendo, possuem um nível muito alto de estresse, sendo que a classe corre alto risco de obter doenças graves, e que por isso, medidas devem ser tomadas com urgência, para contribuir na diminuição do estresse.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:Auriculotherapy is an integrative practice used to relieve physical and emotional symptoms, especially in relation to pain. It has a low cost and easy applicability, which makes it a viable and eligible therapeutic resource. The present study aimed to identify the contributions of auriculotherapy to improve the quality of life of professionals of the correctional system. METHODS: Experimental study, with data collection between July and December 2018 in the female public prison of a city of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Low back pain, anxiety, and stress were the symptoms selected for the intervention with auriculotherapy evaluated at each auriculotherapy session by psychometric instruments. Data analysis was performed using STATA software version 12.0. RESULTS: Women aged between 30 and 44 years old, brown, with complete higher education and living with spouse prevailed. There was a greater reduction in the intensity of symptoms in the intervention group, especially in relation to stress and low back pain, which indicates the effectiveness of auriculotherapy in this group.
