Abstract: The present research took an ecological approach to explore a relational issue in social perception − are the perceived personality characteristics of dyad members and their perceived behavioural exchanges related to perceptions of that dyad's perceived level of friendship? To this end, observers reported on a dyad they knew well using an indigenous measure of personality perception and the Dyadic Behavioural Exchange Scale, combined with an adapted version of Hays' Friendship Observation Checklist. “…The reason for adopting this scale in Study 2 is that the SAPPS captures socially relevant traits and has been well validated as a comprehensive measure of personality perception with Chinese populations (e.g., Chen, Bond, & Fung, 2006). In addition to the personality dimensions similar to those of the five-factor model, the SAPPS dimension of Application, for example, refers to being hard-working, diligent, and practical, and that of Restraint denotes being cautious, dignified, and thorough.…”

“…Advances in studies of interpersonal perception demand a paradigmatic shift from methodological individualism to methodological relationalism (Ho et al , 2001; Ho & Wang, 2008), which provides a framework for research and theory building in various fields. A metarelational analysis (i.e.…”

“…There is coherent empirical support for the facilitating role of value similarity in social relationships (Lea & Duck, 1982;K. Lee et al, 2009;Solomon & Knafo, 2007), whereas studies have shown inconsistent findings with regard to similarity in personality traits (Chen, Bond, & Fung, 2006; R. Y.-P. Lee & Bond, 1998;Rushton & Bons, 2005;Watson, Hubbard, & Wiese, 2000). Similar values are important for continuing social relationships because agreeing on what is important in life promotes harmonious relationships, and vice versa (Edwards & Cable, 2009;Newcomb, 1961).…”
