Background: This work aimed to ascertain future pharmacists’ stressors and stress-coping practices. Methods: Queens’ University Belfast Year 2 and 4 pharmacy students were invited to participate in an ethically approved, pre-piloted questionnaire study. Section A was the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale, Sections B and C related to stressors and stress-coping mechanisms, and Section D gathered non-identifiable demographic information. Data analysis largely took the form of descriptive statistics. Results: A response rate of 94.2% (213/226) was obtained. The mean Perceived Stress Scale score was 19.94 [standard deviation (SD) 6.37], with females having a higher mean score than males (20.55 SD 5.67 versus 18.16 SD 7.42). Common general stressors were career choice, employment opportunities, and finance. Common degree-specific stressors were particular assessments (objective structured clinical examinations and one-off written examinations) and the amount of course material. Popular stress-coping practices included getting emotional support from friends and family and using self-distractions. Conclusion: Stress appears to be an issue among these future pharmacists, and potentially more so for females. While the main stressors are unsurprising, this UK data enables comparisons to be made and helps inform support mechanisms within the university.

A comparative study of mental health and wellbeing among UK students in professional degree programmes Despite elevated rates of suicide and evidence of poor mental health among medical professionals, there is a paucity of research in the UK into the mental health of students destined for these careers. This study estimated and compared the prevalence of mental ill-health in students studying veterinary medicine, medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in the United Kingdom. A group of law students was also included, who although subject to similar stressors as undergraduates, do not go on to share a heightened risk of suicide as professionals. A total of 1,744 respondents completed a questionnaire with validated measures to assess wellbeing, psychological distress, depression and suicidal ideation and attempts. Results indicated that law students experienced the poorest mental health of the student groups studied. Wellbeing was highest among veterinary and medical students. However, the medical students were the most likely to have previously attempted suicide. These findings highlight the importance of directly comparing student groups, in order to appropriately support students as they progress through training and into the professions.

The objective of the study was to examine the stress profile and university performance of pharmacy students. The study was necessary since high academic expectations among pharmacy students can expose them to stressful conditions. In return, stress can affect their level of performance. A quantitative approach was used to meet the objective of the study. A survey questionnaire was electronically administered to the study participants (n=591) to collect socio-demographic data, the student’s overall academic cumulative GPA, and stress indicators. The collected data was analysed quantitatively through the use of SPSS, more so using descriptive statistics and correlation tests. The study first examined the relationship between academic performance and stress and found no correlation between these two variables. The relationship between age and academic stress was also examined, and no correlation was evident. In addition, the year of study was compared to academic stress, and a significant relationship was found to exist between the two variables. Additionally, the year of study was also found to affect cognitive as well as social and interpersonal scores. The findings of the study, therefore, demonstrated the existence of no correlation between academic performance, stress, and age. These findings were unexpected, considering the general assumption that many pharmacy students experience elevated levels of stress compared to their counterparts pursuing less intensive courses. In sum, only the year of study was found to contribute to perceived stress among pharmacy students. Since academic factors are directly under the control of learning institutions, it is key that the management puts in place measures to minimise the resulting stress.
