Abstract: Relatively few studies have examined the mechanisms through which psychological control creates impairments in the scholastic and academic areas of children's and adolescents' functioning. The purpose of this study was to highlight the relation between psychological control and learned helplessness (LH), and also to test school self-efficacy as a mediator in the relation between psychological control and LH. A total of 186 students (103 males and 83 females) aged between 14 and 18 (M = 16.22, SD = 1.21) comple… Show more

“…The questionnaire contained eight items for paternal psychological control and eight for maternal psychological control (e.g., “My mother/father is a person who: Is always trying to change how I feel or think about things). The scale is widely used and has previously shown good psychometric properties, in several cultural contexts, including in Italy (Barber & Harmon, ; Filippello, Sorrenti, Buzzai & Costa, ), and in this study it also showed a good level of reliability (Table ).…”

The Italian version of this instrument is widely used in research ( Filippello, Sorrenti, Buzzai, & Costa, 2015 ; Gugliandolo et al., 2014 ).…”

“…Several studies (Macher, Paechter, Papousek, & Ruggeri, ; Peixoto & Almeida, ; Sorrenti et al, ; Sorrenti, Filippello, Buzzai, & Costa, ) have shown that MO and LH are related to the academic achievement of students. LH can be influenced by both individual factors, such as beliefs, self‐representation, explanatory styles, and personality as well as by contextual factors, like parental practices and the school environment (Filippello, Sorrenti, Buzzai, & Costa, ). In regard to the school context, although several studies (Assor et al, ; Filippello et al, ; Haerens, Aelterman, Vansteenkiste, Soenens, & Van Petegem, ; Reeve, ; Reeve & Jang, ; Soenens & Vansteenkiste, ; Soenens et al, ; Thibaut, Knipprath, Dehaene, & Depaepe, ; Yuan, & Kim, ) have investigated the role of teaching practices and the teacher's use of psychological control during the learning process on students, the role of school LH and MO has not been deeply examined.…”
