The Bottled Drinking Water Teaching Factory (Tefa) at State Polytechnic of Jember (Polije) produces mineral water packaged in several sizes of bottles, glasses, and gallons. The efficiency and effectiveness of the bottled drinking water production process is influenced by the layout of production facilities. The mismatch of machine layout arrangement and the number of unused equipment causes material flow to be longer. This study aims to redesign the layout of the Tefa Bottled Drinking Water facility to maximize area utilization and reduce empty space. This research provides recommendations for facility layout improvements using the Systematic layout planning (SLP) method. Alternative designs were proposed and compared the performance of each design with the initial layout. The results of the proposed method’s distance processing affect the total material handling cost. The total distance of the proposed method facility is 11.7 meters while the distance of the current facility is 28.8 meters so that can save material handling costs by 59%.

Workplace design is an essential process for the manufacturing industry to realize a low manufacturing cost with high productivity and competitive advantage, as well as high employee performance and well-being. Although research on workplace design in the Indonesian manufacturing industry began more than 20 years ago, workplace conditions in the manufacturing industry, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia, have remained subpar, with high material handling costs. This review article aims to evaluate recent research on workplace design in the Indonesian manufacturing SMEs and explore possible directions for further research. The results of this review indicate that the research on workplace design in Indonesian manufacturing SMEs is mostly focused on the department area (micro-level), using systematic layout planning methods to improve material handling activities. Even though environmental conditions are unfavorable with low levels of occupational safety and health, research that consider these two in the process of designing workplace in Indonesian manufacturing SMEs is still limited. This review also shows the possibility of developing an integrated workplace design by involving environmental ergonomics and occupational safety and health in manufacturing SMEs.

Kerupuk dapat dijumpai di toko maupun rumah makan, mulai dari rumah makan yang besar seperti restoran hingga warung kecil yang menjual kerupuk. Kerupuk merupakan makanan kering yang terbuat dari adonan tepung yang dicampur dengan bumbu sebagai perasa, penyajian kerupuk ini pada dasarnya harus melalui proses penggorengan sebelum dinikmati. Kerupuk merupakan salah satu makanan yang sering diminati oleh masyarakat, karena rasanya yang nikmat serta gurih dan harganya yang terjangkau menyebabkan kerupuk banyak diminati. Berdasarkan hasil wawancara, penjualan kerupuk dibulan april 2022 sekitar 5 ton hingga dibulan September 2022 kurang lebih 15 ton mengalami peningkatan membuat salah satu pabrik kerupuk di Surabaya masih bertahan hingga saat ini. Banyaknya permintaan dan penjualan terhadap kerupuk perusahaan diharuskan dapat memenuhi permintaan tersebut untuk memperoleh keuntungan yang maksimal, akan tetapi perusahaan tidak bisa memenuhi permintaan yang terus meningkat itu dikarenakan kapasitas produksi tidak sebanyak permintaan yang diminta. Hal yang mempengaruhi kapasitas produksi antara lain pentempatan stasiun kerja yang tidak berurutan maka perlu adanya perbaikan rancangan layout menggunakan metode Systematic Layout Planning (SLP) untuk memperoleh jarak perpindahan bahan baku yang singkat dan aliran proses produksi yang berurutan, sehingga perusahaan dapat mengatasi permasalahan dan dapat memenuhi permintaan konsumen yang terus meningkat tersebut.
