Peptide–Polymer Hybrid Nanotubes

Abstract: Disguise tactics: Peptide–polymer hybrid nanotubes are constructed in which self‐assembled cyclic peptides govern the structure, and a synthetic polymer coating determines the surface chemistry. Formation of the latter is initiated in situ from preorganized peptide building blocks. The picture shows an AFM image of nanotubes on a silicon wafer.

“…The divergent route, whereby polymer chains are grown from the CP amino-acid side chains, can be achieved in a 'graft-from' procedure. For example, Couet et al 44,45 have employed this route to synthesize CP-polymer NTs from CPs bearing initiator side chains. Although the resulting CP-polymer NTs are uniform in length, it is difficult to assess the polymer molecular weight and uniformity as well as the overall polymergrafting density on the CP 45 , and this strategy does not allow for the conjugation of two different polymer chains to the CP core.…”

“…Important principles of self-assembly are chemical complementarity and structural compatibility through weak and noncovalent interactions. Different construction units, such as well ordered nanofiber scaffolds [233,234], peptide nanotubes [235][236][237], segmented surface assembling peptides as a 'molecular carpet' [238][239][240] and dipolar molecules with changeable conformation as a 'molecular switch' [241][242][243], can be realized by specially designed peptide units and sequences. However, the realization of peptide scaffolds by molecular self-assembly is extremely extensive and it depends on elaborate techniques.…”
