“…28 In terms of the relationship between PTX3 and platelet reactivity, Santilli et al conducted a 12-month longitudinal study to test the hypothesis that laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding-induced weight loss was associated with changes in platelet activation markers and PTX3. 16 They reported that the reduction in inflammation, insulin resistance, and thromboxane biosynthesis associated with laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding is paralleled by an increase in plasma PTX3, which remains a significant predictor of thromboxane metabolite excretion during 1-year follow-up. 16 Pentraxin 3 was inversely related to platelet activation markers, 11-dehydro-thromboxane B2 and CD40 L. Moreover, multiple regression analysis demonstrated that plasma PTX3 was an independent predictor of urinary 11-dehydro-thromboxane B2 excretion.…”

“…However, there are conflicting reports on the effects of PTX3 in the cardiovascular system since several studies demonstrate cardioprotective actions of PTX3 while others argue that the elevated PTX3 plasma levels in patients with cardiovascular conditions correlate with disease severity and poor prognosis. 13,15,16 Pentraxin 3 levels probably reflect an acute inflammatory response to acute atherothrombosis, thus identifying patients at higher risk of a negative outcome. 12,15 More research is required to better understand the role of PTX3 and platelets activation.…”

“…These results are in agreement with previous studies from Ogawa et al (9) and Osorio-Conles et al (10), who both found an inverse association between the serum blood levels of PTX3 and BMI. In addition, PTX3 serum levels are increased in obese patients who underwent dietary intervention (11) and gastric banding (7). There was no association between PTX3 levels and the lipid profile or the glycemic controls; however, the elevation of this biomarker itself is of interest for patients undergoing bariatric surgery as it has been shown that PTX3 may exert a protective role on the cardiovasculature (12).…”
