“…These effects are the subject of current studies. After evacuation followed by gas filling and circulation through getters, 20-fold higher gains were reached with the Penning mixture [29,30] At cryogenic temperatures, the maximum achievable gain in all gases is expected to drop due to the increase in gas density, as recently demonstrated with cascaded GEMs [10,11] and in Resistive Electrode Thick GEMs (RETGEM) [21].…”

“…For the present experiments we used collimated 5.895 keV Mn X-rays from a 5 mCi radioactive source with the 6.492 keV Mn line filtered with a 0.01 mm thick Cr foil. Possibly due to recombination, there was a small dependence of the collected charge, , on the voltage difference applied to the drift region, which increased with this voltage until it reached a plateau at about 2000 V [12]. For the measurements of the -values the drift voltages used were the ones in the plateau.…”

“…Corrections for losses due to the escape of Ar L-and Xe M-fluorescence X-rays were also made since X-ray spectra were obtained during this second step using a multichannel analyser. These peaks are typically 30 times smaller than the main peak and since the -value does not change with the energy in this few keV range by more than 10% [1], [2] it is reasonable to make these corrections assuming a -value for the escape peaks equal to the full absorption energy peak [12]. Corrections due to pile-up effects, a small broad peak observable between the main peak and twice its amplitude, were also made counting twice the number of events in this region since they correspond to the absorption of two 5.895 keV photons.…”
