Penile dermatophytosis

Abstract: Dermatophyte infections of the penis and scrotum are relatively rare compared with those involving the groin. Four cases of penile tinea due to Trichophyton rubrum are described. All patients had associated foci of fungal infection, but only one had crural involvement. Treatment with oral antifungal agents led to complete resolution of penile dermatophytosis.

“…Tinea demonstrates an annular array with peripheral linear erythema surmounted by scale and marked central clearing. Although candida may well affect genital skin, especially the vulva, tinea only rarely directly affects genital skin, 21 but rather is most prominent on the upper inner thighs. Dermatophyte infection of the groin is almost always associated with a fungal infection of the toenails.…”
