The brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys is an invasive agricultural pest in North America and Europe, and also a dwelling nuisance in autumn, due to the overwintering adults aggregating inside buildings. The repellent potential of ginger, clove, vetiver and turmeric essential oils (EOs) was tested on H. halys adults of three different physiological‐behavioural phases: exiting overwintering (EXOV), active during summer (SUMM) and entering overwintering (ENOV). In a two‐choice apparatus, fresh food was used as an attractant in both sides, together with three males when testing ENOV individuals. A filter paper with different concentrations of the EOs was the treatment side, and a filter paper with ethanol acted as control. The position of the individually tested bugs was recorded after 1, 6 and 24 hr. All tested EOs were repellent at concentrations higher than 3%, independent of sex or length of exposure. Turmeric and clove were the most repellent EOs, whereas ginger and vetiver showed on average a medium‐to‐low repellency. Significant differences emerged among the physiological‐behavioural phases, with SUMM individuals showing a greater repellency to many of the tested concentrations, and EXOV individuals being overall the least susceptible to these substances. The response to vetiver oil was ambiguous, as at 25%, it elicited both a strong repellency in SUMM and a strong attraction in EXOV. Turmeric and clove EOs are promising candidates in integrated pest management strategies to reduce attacks by H. halys to susceptible crops especially during summer, as well as to prevent the entrance of overwintering bugs in buildings in autumn.

Pest insects known as darkling beetles (Alphitobius diaperinus) are common in poultry farms. These pests can develop into a variety of disease vectors, causing damage to chicken coops, decreased chick performance, and financial losses to farmers. In Indonesia, synthetic insecticides are still used for pest control, which is detrimental to non-target creatures and the environment. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effectiveness of biopesticides from cinnamon bark extract (Cinnamomum aromaticum), nutmeg seeds (Myristica fragrans), lavender flowers (Lavandula angustifolia), and lime peel (Citrus aurantifolia), as well as synthetic insecticides alpha-cypermethrin against A. diaperinus larvae and imago. Bioinsecticide levels are 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, and 10%, while alpha-cypermethrin levels are 1%, 4%, 7%, and 10%, respectively, based on LC50 values. The analysis was repeated three times and the treatment was carried out every two days for a total of 14 days. The data were analyzed with paired sample t-tests to determine the average difference in each treatment when there was an average difference and calculated N-Gain score to determine the effectiveness of biopesticides and synthetic insecticides. The average value of N-Gain essential oil from cinnamon bark extract was successful in causing A.diaperinus death in the imago stage (81.14) and the highest larvae (80) of other test solutions. Cinnamon bark extract and nutmeg seed extract are effective in imago (95.14) and larvae (78.91), respectively, and can be used as a natural biopesticide to replace synthetic insecticides in the control of A.diaperinus in imago and larvae stages. Repellent Activity of Waste Extract from Two Local Medicinal Plant Against Rice Weevil (Sitophilus oryzae)

In order to find natural and inexpensive bioinsecticides, the active compound of waste extract from two medicinal plants were analyzed. Ethanolic extracts of Amomum cardamomum and Zingiber zerumbet were evaluated under laboratory conditions for their repellency against rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae, L.). Four extracts concentration were tested in this research, i.e: 25, 50, 75 and 100%. Efficacy was measured based on the response of rice weevil in preference tests using Y Olfactometer Tube, then the results were converted into the Percentage Repellency (PR) and Preference Index (PI). The PR data were analyzed using ANOVA, whereas PI values were analyzed descriptively. The result showed that the PR were significantly (LSD test; α> 0.05) and revealed that waste extracts repel the rice weevil at 100% solution. The highest PR was found at 100% solution in both extracts, however, statistically the repellency of A. cardamomum waste extract was higher than Z. zerumbet's. Likewise, the PI of both extracts showed negative value at 75 and 100% concentration. This study concluded that extract of A. cardamomum and Z. zerumbet wastes have repellent effect against rice weevil and A. cardamomum repellency is better than Z. zerumbet. The findings of this study can provide a useful information for development of a rice weevil repellent extracted from waste product of medicinal plants that is more economically and environmentally friendly than synthetic insect repellents.
