Plastic waste continues to increase by 4% every year. One type of plastic is Styrofoam, which comes from polystyrene (PS) polymers. However, Styrofoam has the disadvantage that it is not easily decomposed in nature. It is necessary to replace plastic-based food containers using biodegradable, abundantly available, low-cost natural materials. This research uses rice straw and bagasse with the addition of orange peel to give the best results on water absorption, tensile strength, and degradation time in food containers. The orange peel addition is varied at 0%, 5%, and 10% (w/w). In the water absorption test, the best value was obtained at 10.95% for the bagasse container with the addition of orange peel at 10% (w/w). In contrast, the best water absorption for the rice straw container was 11.02%, with the addition of orange peel at 10% (w/w). In the tensile strength test, the best value was obtained by the bagasse container at 6.592 MPa with the addition of orange peel at 10% (w/w) and rice straw at 4.3812 MPa with the addition of orange peel at 10% (w/w). Degradation tests showed that these natural containers can be degraded within two months in the soil.

The high cellulose content of bagasse allows it to be developed into a variety of valuable products, one of them is cellulose acetate which will be used to make biodegradable foam. The purpose of this research is to determine the best conditions for the synthesis of cellulose acetate from bagasse and test how cellulose acetate can be used to make biodegradable foam. This study used phosphoric acid as a solvent and glacial acetic acid as an acetylating agent to make cellulose acetate through the acetylation process. The variations in acetylation time in this study were 15, 30, and 45 minutes and the volume of glacial acetic acid as acetylating agent was 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 ml. The results of this study indicated that the optimum conditions for the synthesis of cellulose acetate are 15 minutes of acetylation with a volume of 100 ml of glacial acetic acid, with a yield of 79.31% cellulose acetate, 36.19% acetyl content and a degree of substitution of 2.11. The test for the application of cellulose acetate to make biodegradable foam obtained a water absorption of 18.81%, the biodegradation test obtained was 24.53% in 14 days. In the biodegradable foam leak test for 10 minutes, no leakage occurred. This indicated that the biodegradable foam obtained was suitable to use because it complied with SNI.

Textile industry waste at this time is enough to worry the community and the environment. The presence of synthetic dyes in water is hazardous, even in small concentrations. These synthetic dyes are derivatives of aromatic compounds such as benzene, toluene, and naphthalene, which are more resistant and stable than natural dyes. The adsorption method is used because it is easier to do, has no side effects, and does not require complicated and expensive equipment. In this study, the shells and membranes of discarded chicken eggs became useful as an absorbent of indigo carmine dye with an adsorption capacity of 6.399 mg/g. The adsorption reaction kinetics were analyzed from the optimal contact time data, and the reaction isotherm was analyzed from the adsorption optimal concentration data. The kinetic model that fits the research is the second pseudo-order with R2 = 0.9998. The adsorption mechanism demonstrates that the adsorption capacity is proportional to the adsorbent's active sites. The adsorption isotherm model, with R2 = 0.9748, is more closely related to the Freundlich isotherm model, indicating that adsorption occurs in several layers. From an economic point of view, chicken egg shells and membranes can be recommended as dye absorbers that are eco-friendly, efficient, and simple to obtain while lowering organic solid waste.
