Pelagic Occurrence of Greenland Halibut,Reinhardtius hippoglossoides(Walbaum), in West Greenland Waters

Abstract: The extent of pelagic occurrence of Greenland halibut, Reinhardtius hippoglossoides (Walbaum), in Greenland waters was evaluated from four pelagic surveys, two conducted at deep water areas where the commercial fishery takes place and two in areas considered to be important nursery areas. The results from the pelagic surveys are compared to results from bottom trawl surveys conducted in the same areas and at the same time. Pelagic behaviour was further supported by investigations of stomach contents from Green… Show more

“…The vertical movement by Greenland halibut was not related to diel cycles, which is consistent with the results of stratified random bottom and pelagic surveys (Jørgensen 1997a). The estimated swimming speeds (steep ascents and descents) throughout the depth record were largely not indicative of rapid vertical movements into the pelagic water column potentially to feed as has been reported for Greenland halibut in the Northeast Atlantic (Vollen & Albert 2007, Albert et al 2012.…”

“…The percentage of empty stomachs (PES) was used as a measure of feeding intensity in accordance with previous work (Junquera, 1995;Rodríguez-Marin et al, 1995Jørgensen, 1997). The relative importance of individual prey taxa was assessed in terms of percentage frequency of occurrence (FO), percentage by number and percentage by weight (Clark, 1985), and by using the mean partial fullness index (PFI) as described in Lilly and Fleming (1981).…”

“…R. hippoglossoides is however known to perfoffl! extensive vertical feeding migr~tions in West Greenland waters CC:hristensenand Lear 1977; Jørgensen 1997), but this has not been reported from the eastem Norwegian Sea and the fish observed pelagically by Jørgensen (1997) were rarely more than one year old. Michalsen and Nedreaas (in press) conclude that adult R. hippoglossoides also leaves the bottom to feed on pelagic organisms such as herring in the water column in the , western Barents Sea.…”

“…Several studies of the diet of this species have been carried out in the western Barents Sea/north-eastem Norwegian Sea (Nizovtsev 1969;Haug and Gulliksen 1982;Shvagzhdis 1990;Michalsen and Nedreaas, in press), off West Greenland (Pedersen and Riget 1993;Jørgensen 1997), in Icelandic waters (Paschen 1968;Skuladottir and J6nsson,1991) and in the north-eastem Atlantic (Bowering and Lilly)992),while information on diet in the eastem Nof"(egian Sea south of 71 °\'< is SCllfCe. The general impressimt fromthese studies is that Greenland halibut is piscivoro~s but also to same :degree feeds on shrimps and cephalopods.…”
