Abstract:Resumo Este artigo analisa a religiosidade de um marinheiro escravo seiscentista, Pedro João, preso pela inquisição portuguesa. Forçado a professar a fé dos seus senhores, Pedro João passou do catolicismo (no qual foi batizado e crismado em Olinda, sua cidade natal) para o protestantismo ao ser aprisionado em alto-mar por um corsário inglês, em 1629.
