Pedometer-Determined Step Count Guidelines for Classifying Walking Intensity in a Young Ostensibly Healthy Population

Abstract: Pedometer cut-points corresponding to minimal moderate intensity walking were 96 steps/min in men and 107 steps/min in women, or roughly 100 steps/min for both. This translates to approximately 3,000 steps in 30 min of moderate-intensity ambulatory activity for both genders.

“…Some previous studies that aimed to find equivalences between the "30 minutes" and the "10000 steps" messages have found increment estimations around 3100 and 4000 steps (13,14) . In the present study, the definition of the target increment in the number of steps was based on a classification suggested by Tudor-Locke and colleagues for a moderate intensity activity (13) .…”

“…In the present study, the definition of the target increment in the number of steps was based on a classification suggested by Tudor-Locke and colleagues for a moderate intensity activity (13) . According to this study, the exact value obtained in the intermediate steps/ minute cut-off value would be 3300 steps per day to be taken above the usual.…”

“…With particular reference to intensity-based steps, recently documented literature on intensity-based steps/day [18,19] suggests a minimum of 100 steps/minute to be a reliable estimate of, and target for, moderateintensity physical activity (aerobic steps). Current literature also suggests that the accumulation of moderate-intensity physical activity in bouts of at least 10 minutes is acceptable in contributing towards meeting current physical activity guidelines.…”
