Pedobacter lentus sp. nov. and Pedobacter terricola sp. nov., isolated from soil

Abstract: Two Gram-negative, non-motile, pleomorphic bacterial strains, DS-40T and DS-45T, were isolated from a soil sample collected from Dokdo, Korea, and their exact taxonomic positions were investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strains DS-40T and DS-45T grew optimally at 25 °C and pH 6.5–7.5 in the presence of 0–1.0 % (w/v) NaCl. They contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and possessed iso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH) as the maj… Show more

“…This fatty acid profile, including the major fatty acids [iso-C 15 : 0 , C 16 : 0 and summed feature 3 (iso-C 15 : 0 2-OH and/or C 16 : 1 v7c)], is Yoon et al (2007a). All strains were positive for catalase, oxidase, alkaline phosphatase, esterase (C4), esterase lipase (C8), leucine arylamidase, valine arylamidase, cystine arylamidase, hydrolysis of aesculin and assimilation of L-arabinose, D-glucose, D-mannose, L-rhamnose, maltose and Nacetylglucosamine.…”

“…All were negative for Gram stain, sporulation, urease, lipase (C14), trypsin, b-glucuronidase, a-fucosidase, production of H 2 S and indole, nitrate reduction, growth on MacConkey medium and assimilation of D-arabinose, D-fucose, L-arabitol, adipate, caprate, phenylacetate, ribose, D-sorbitol, salicin, melibiose, citrate and malate. similar to those of Pedobacter species, although there are differences in the proportions of some fatty acids, perhaps because of differences in the extraction and cultivation conditions (Shivaji et al, 2005;Vanparys et al, 2005;Yoon et al, 2006Yoon et al, , 2007aHwang et al, 2006;Ten et al, 2006).…”

“…At the time of writing, the genus comprised 16 recognized species, including the recently described species Pedobacter lentus and Pedobacter terricola (Yoon et al, 2007). In this study, taxonomic characterization of a Pedobacter-like bacterial strain, TR6-06 T , is reported.…”

“…fr). Members of the genus have been isolated from different environments such as soils and compost (Yoon et al, 2006(Yoon et al, , 2007aTen et al, 2006;Jeon et al, 2009), glaciers (Margesin et al, 2003;Shivaji et al, 2005), freshwater Muurholm et al, 2007) and activated sludge (Steyn et al, 1998). All members of the genus Pedobacter are Gram-negative rods with menaquinone 7 (MK-7) as the major respiratory quinone and iso-C 15 : 0 , summed feature 3 (iso-C 15 : 0 2-OH and/or C 16 : 1 v7c) and iso-C 17 : 0 3-OH as the major fatty acids.…”
