Pediatric vision screening using the plusoptiX A12C photoscreener in Chinese preschool children aged 3 to 4 years

Abstract: This study evaluated the performance of plusoptiX A12C in detecting amblyopia risk factors (ARFs) in Chinese children aged 3-to-4-year. PlusoptiX examination was successfully conducted among 1,766 subjects without cycloplegia to detect refractive error, asymmetry and media opacity. Cycloplegic retinoscopy (CR) was conducted on 357 children suspected of having vision abnormalities. Statistical differences between CR and the device were confirmed using the mean spherical value (+1.41 ± 0.87 D versus +1.14 ± 0.81… Show more

“…However, paired t-test revealed that both the photoscreeners tend to measure the SE with a mild myopic shift, −0.17 D for Spot and −0.12 D for SW800. Studies from other groups also reported myopic shift of the measurements from photoscreeners such as Spot (−0.49 D),8 PlusOptix A09 (−0.52 to −0.57 D)18 19 and plusoptiX A12C (−0.45 D) 20. This less hyperopic measurement could be expected by the pupil dilation.…”

“…The overall over-estimation of the prevalence is 2.7% (78.2% compared with 75.6%) for myopia and 1% (2.5% compared with 2.5%) for high myopia. Such myopic shift measurement is not only seen in the Spot photoscreener, but also in other screeners such as PlusOptix A09 [ 35 , 36 ] and plusoptiX A12C [ 37 ]. This increased myopic measurement could be explained by the pupil dilation or the accommodation induced by the 1 m working distance of screener [ 5 ].…”

“…NES is a population‐based cohort study, aiming to longitudinally observe the onset and progression of childhood ocular diseases in eastern China . When compared with previous data in NPVP, data obtained in NES can also help us understand the changes in ophthalmic problems in preschool children in a certain area.…”
