Pediatric Robotic Extravesical Ureteral Reimplantation: Comparison With Open Surgery

Abstract: Robotic assisted laparoscopic extravesical ureteral reimplantation appears to be a safe and efficacious option for repair of vesicoureteral reflux. This early series shows success rates similar to the open approach. We observed decreased length of stay and use of postoperative narcotics. These findings may serve to justify further exploration of this technology and to provide data for design of a prospective trial, although the relative value of specific reductions in morbidity will need to be defined.

“…As reported previously, the technique is shown to be safe and effective [8,9,12,13,17] . Although the technique remains challenging, robotics certainly add to the precision and ease of most surgical steps when compared to conventional laparoscopy.…”

“…When looking at the 2 latest papers on robotic extravesical Lich-Gregoir procedures published in 2011, the total number of patients is 25 and 22, respectively, but the first group mentions only 4 patients with a duplex system and no further patients with diverticula, urethral valves or any other 'complicating factors' [12,13] . The other group even excluded the patients with associated urinary pathology other than duplication or diverticula in their retrospective analysis, but omits all details regarding these patients, if any.…”

“…Akhavan et al [12] detected 92.3% success rate, and complications at a rate of 10% including febrile urinary system infection, ureteral obstruction, periureteral fluid collection, and ureteral injury. Smith et al [13] compared open surgery, and RALUR technique. İn both groups higher success rates were reported.…”
