Pediatric Retinal Detachment in an Asian Population With High Prevalence of Myopia

Abstract: Myopia was the commonest risk factor for pediatric RD in our population. Good anatomical and functional outcome can be achieved with surgery. Increasing age at presentation and absence of proliferative vitreoretinopathy was associated with anatomical and functional success. High myopia was associated with poorer anatomical and functional outcome.

“…Depending on the location of the detachment, involvement of the macula and other co‐existing morbidities, vision may be affected. Surgical management of retinal detachment is common and the choice of procedures; scleral buckling, vitrectomy, pneumatic retinopexy or a combination of these vary, depending on the location, size of the detachment and the surgeon 2019. The presence of epiretinal membrane, paravascular retinal cysts, vascular microfolds, and tractional ILM detachment are characteristics of retinal detachment associated with myopia 2015…”

“…1 Increased severity of myopia significantly elevates the risk of developing sightthreatening ocular diseases, including myopic maculopathy, [2][3][4][5] glaucoma, [6][7][8] cataract, 9,10 and retinal detachment. 11,12 To reduce the risk of myopia-related pathologies in later life, a range of potential pharmaceutical and optical interventions have been investigated in an attempt to slow childhood myopia progression.…”

“…Second, the neuropsychiatric assessment was not conducted on patients with RD. Third, many predisposing factors of RD are common in the clinic; therefore, the VBM results of RD cannot be accurately evaluated (3–5).…”

“…Common risk factors for RD include high myopia, trauma, and cataract surgery, among others (3–5). Early symptoms of RD include acute-onset floaters and flashes of light, decreased central vision, visual distortion, and visual field defects (6).…”
