Aim: Osteopontin (OPN) has been investigated as a biomarker for cancer and nonmalignant diseases during the last decades. Data about OPN as a potential biomarker in childhood diseases are still sparse, and reference values are not available in children. We aimed to establish reference values for children from birth to young adulthood and evaluate whether there are age-, gender-, and weight-specific differences. Method:Umbilical cord blood and blood plasma samples of 117 children were collected in the Children's Hospital of Saarland University in Homburg/Saar. OPN levels were measured by ELISA, and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software.Results: Neonates, infants, toddlers, young children, adolescents, and adults were divided into the following six age groups: newborns (birth), infancy and toddlers (0-24 months), early childhood (3-6 years), middle childhood (7-11 years), adolescence (12-18 years), and adults (> 18 years).Highest blood OPN levels were found in the group of 0-1 years of age. OPN blood levels declined significantly with age (Spearman r = −0.874; P < 0.001). Conclusion:Our work is the first prospective and systematic study analyzing OPN cord blood and blood plasma levels in children of all ages. It is the first study yielding reference values for different age groups from birth to young adulthood. Our data give insight on how OPN in umbilical cord blood and OPN in blood plasma are physiologically influenced during childhood development and growth with high OPN levels after birth and a constant age-related decline until the age of 14, when OPN levels reach similar values to those measured in adults.

Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the development of diseases induced by welding fumes. To our knowledge, little information is available on the relationship between multiple heavy metal exposure and oxidative stress in welders. We assessed the relationship between multiple heavy metal exposure and oxidative damage by analyzing 174 nonsmoking male welders in a shipyard. Urinary metals were used as the internal dose of exposure to metals in welding fumes, and urinary 8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) was used as an oxidative DNA damage marker. The relationship between workers’ metal levels and 8-OHdG was estimated using a multiple linear regression model. The geometric mean levels of urinary chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) were considerably higher in welders than in controls. Urinary Cr and Ni were determined as effective predictors of urinary 8-OHdG levels after adjusting for covariates. Oxidative DNA damage was associated with both Cr and Ni of welding fume exposure in shipyard welders (Ln Cr: β = 0.33, 95%C.I. = 0.16–0.49; Ln Ni: β = 0.27, 95%C.I. = 0.12–0.43). In this study, we investigated the significantly positive relationship between urinary metals (especially Cr and Ni) and 8-OHdG in nonsmoking shipyard welders. Moreover, the use of particulate respirators did not reduce metal exposure and oxidative damage. Therefore, we infer that hazard identification for welders should be conducted.

Background: Hemoglobin A1c [HbA1c] is the best standard for measurements of glycemic control level in type 1 diabetes mellitus, especially in children. As iron deficiency anemia is a prevalent finding in children with diabetes, it may affect HbA1c levels in those children. Aim of the work:To determine the effects of iron deficiency anemia on hemoglobin A1c in type 1 diabetes mellitus Patients and methods: This was cross-sectional analytic study was done on 80 children with diabetes with type 1DM receiving insulin therapy; the patients divided into two groups, 21 diabetic children with iron deficiency anemia and 59 diabetic children with iron sufficient state, attending to the pediatric department of Al-Azher University Hospital in Damietta from February 2019 to September 2019. All children included were subjected to complete medical history, general examination, systemic examination, and laboratory investigations; [Complete blood count [CBC], HbA1c, Serum Iron, Serum Ferritin, Total Iron Binding Capacity, Fasting blood glucose, Post Prandial blood glucose, and ESR].Results: In our study, we divided all patients [80 diabetic children] regarding glycemic control according to HbA1c value into three levels, the first level was optimal glycemic control level [HbA1c< 7.6%], the second level was suboptimal glycemic control [HbA1c 7.6 -9.0%] and the third level was poor glycemic control level [HbA1c> 9.0%], there was a statically highly significant increase in HbA1c value of the iron-deficient diabetic group in compared to iron sufficient diabetic group at all levels of glycemic control. Conclusion:Iron deficiency anemia seems to increase HbA1c value in diabetic children Type 1, at the same degree of glycemia.
