Pediatric odontogenic fibromyxoma of the mandible: Case report and review of the literature

Abstract: A case of pediatric odontogenic fibromyxoma in the mandible is described. Although rare in the pediatric population, odontogenic fibromyxomas should be included as a differential diagnostic consideration when evaluating tumors of the maxillofacial skeleton. Accurate pathologic diagnosis is critical to ensure proper management.

“…Fibromyxomas express vimentin and are typically negative for S-100, CD34, SMA, and CD68 [19]. A summary of the reported demographics and histopathological characteristics of odontogenic fibromyxomas published within the last 10 years is provided in Table 1 [14,18,[20][21][22][23][24][25][26].…”

“…Owing to high recurrence rate after conservative treatment and considerable debate on its appropriate treatment, complete surgical resection is the standard approach for the management of this tumour 18 19. An extensive search of the literature on the management of these tumours showed 45.5% of mandibular cases were treated surgically by enucleation, curettage or enbloc resection 1 9 18–20.…”
