This work investigates the neutron-induced fission of 234 U and the fission-fragment properties for neutron energies between E n = 0.2 and 5.0 MeV with a special highlight on the prominent vibrational resonance at E n = 0.77 MeV. Angular, energy, and mass distributions were determined based on the double-energy technique by means of a twin Frisch-grid ionization chamber. The experimental data are parametrized in terms of fission modes based on the multimodal random neck-rupture model. The main results are a verified strong angular anisotropy and fluctuations in the energy release as a function of incident-neutron energy.

Abstract. The transition from asymmetric to symmetric fission as a function of the excitation energy and the nucleon composition of fissioning Th nuclei is investigated for the 232 Th(n,f) reaction. Observed neutron-induced fission cross section is described in a fission/evaporation approximation. A separate relatively high outer fission barrier E S L f B with significant curvature was assumed for the symmetric (SL) mode, while the inner one (E S L(AS ) f A ) was assumed to be the same for symmetric and asymmetric (AS) modes. Axial asymmetry and mass symmetry is assumed for the outer saddle of the SL-mode, as distinct from the AS-mode. A drop of (E S L f A − E AS f A ) = 3.5 MeV to 1-1.5 MeV for Th nuclei with A ≤ 226 is responsible for the increase of the symmetric fission contribution to 225,229,230,231,232 Th(n,f) fission cross sections with neutron energy up to E n = 200 MeV. It is shown above 80 MeV the 229,230,231,232 Th(n,f) fission cross sections are no longer dependent on the Th target nuclide fissility.

The existence of a new type of cluster decay called "collinear cluster tri-partition" (CCT) is discussed by an analysis of the landscape of the potential energy surface (PES). The total energy of the ternary system is found as a sum the binding energies of fragments and nucleus-nucleus interaction between them. The pre-scission state of the ternary system is assumed to be arranged as a chain of the three fragments along a straight line. Minima and valleys of the PES are determined by variation of the proton and neutron distributions between them. Pre-scission prompt emission of neutrons is assumed and PES is calculated for the cases of emission of 2-4 neutrons. The shows that the experimentally observed 68 Ni is formed as the edge fragment of the ternary system connecting to Sn by Si and Ca isotopes at fission of 236 U and 252 Cf, respectively.
