OBJETIVO: Determinar a prevalência das deformidades congênitas da parede torácica anterior em escolares de 11 a 14 anos. MÉTODOS: Participaram do estudo escolares da rede estadual de ensino da cidade de Manaus (AM). Para a composição de uma amostra estatisticamente significativa, com precisão de 1% e IC95%, foram incluídos 1.332 escolares. A deformidade pectus foi identificada através de exame físico do tórax, e os indivíduos com esta deformidade responderam a um questionário com questões sobre hereditariedade e sintomatologia decorrente da anomalia torácica. RESULTADOS: A idade média dos participantes foi de 11,7 anos. A prevalência da deformidade pectus foi de 1,95% (pectus excavatum: 1,275%; pectus carinatum: 0,675%). Dos 26 escolares com deformidades pectus, 17 (65,4%) tinham pectus excavatum, e 18 (69,2%) eram do sexo masculino. Houve associação com a escoliose em 3 casos (11,5%). História familiar de pectus foi relatada por 17 escolares (65,4%), e 17 (65,4%) relataram dor torácica, dispneia ou palpitações. CONCLUSÕES: A prevalência das deformidades pectus encontrada neste estudo (1,95%) foi inferior àquela de trabalhos em outras regiões do país (3,6-4,9%), porém, superior àquela relatada na literatura (média, 1%).

Chest wall deformities can be divided into 2 main categories: congenital and acquired. Congenital chest wall deformities may occur any time between birth and early adolescence. Acquired chest wall deformities typically follow prior chest surgery or a postoperative diaphragmatic hernia repair. Congenital chest wall deformities fall within 2 main groups: those with either a depression or protrusion of the sternum and those with varying degrees of aplasia or dysplasia. The most common chest wall deformities are pectus excavatum (88%) and pectus carinatum (5%). Surgery intervention is an accepted practice intervention for severe chest wall deformities. Pulmonary rehabilitation could play a important role in prevention of pulmonary complications after surgery. Other than surgical intervention, exercise is a treatment alternative. With an increase in strength and muscle tone by exercise training, the chest wall deformity may be diminished or at least maintained. In addition, the increase in the intensity of training, particularly to the anterior chest wall, may help in building up larger muscle bulk and result in a better cosmetic outlook.Keywords: Chest wall deformities, exercise training, pulmonary rehabilitation ÖzetKonjenital ve sonradan gelişen deformiteler olmak üzere 2 ana gruba ayrılır. Konjenital göğüs duvar deformiteleri doğumdan hemen sonra ya da adolesan dönemin başların-da ortaya çıkarken, sonradan oluşan deformiteler herhangi bir göğüs cerrahisi operasyonu sonrasında ya da postoperatif diyafragmatik herni onarımlarını takiben gelişebilir. Konjenital göğüs duvar anomalileri sternumun depresyonu ya da sternumun protrüzyonu olmak üzere 2 grup altında incelenir. Bu duruma değişik derecelerde plazi ya da displazi eşlik edebilir. En yaygın göğüs duvar deformiteleri pektus ekskavatum (%88) ve pektus karinatum (%5) dur. Şiddetli göğüs duvar deformitelerinde cerrahi müdahaleler kabul edilen tedavi yöntemleridir. Pulmoner rehabilitasyon ameliyat sonrası pulmoner komplikasyonların önlenmesinde önemli bir rol oynar. Egzersiz, cerrahi müdahalelerin dışında alternatif olarak kullanılan bir tedavi yöntemidir. Egzersiz eğitimi ile kas kuvveti ve tonusunun arttırılması ile göğüs duvar deformitelerinin şiddeti azaltılabilir ya da en azından ilerlemesine engel olunabilir. Egzersiz eğitimi ile özellikle anterior göğüs duvarında büyük kas kitlesi oluşturularak iyi bir kozmetik görünüm sağlanabilir.

Pectus excavatum (PE) is a ventral chest wall deformity, also known as funnel chest, sunken chest, chondrosternal depression or koilosternia. The 4 months old, 1.3 kg intact-female Pekingese dog was evaluated for acute semicoma and convulsion. The client reported that this patient have had chronic loss of appetite, intermittent dyspnea and palpable sunken breast. The other littermates did not show any abnormalities. On physical examination, cachexia (BCS 1/5), concave sternum, flatten thoracic cavity and cardiac murmur were observed. On radiographic study, the caudal sternum cave to vertebrae and narrowing thoracic cavity. The severities of thoracic deformity were evaluated by deformation indices such as-Frontosagittal index (FSI) and vertebral index (VI). Moderate to severe PE was founded by the radiological measurements.
