Peak velocity and its time limit are as good as the velocity associated with VO2max for training prescription in runners

Abstract: This study compared the effects of 4 weeks of training prescribed by peak velocity (V peak ) or velocity associated with maximum oxygen uptake (vVO 2max ) in moderately trained endurance runners. Study participants were 14 runners (18–35 years) randomized into 2 groups, named group VO 2 (GVO 2 ) and group V peak (GVP). The GVO 2 had training prescribed by vVO 2max and its time limit (t lim ), whereas the GVP had training prescribed by V peak and its t lim . Four tests were performed on a treadmill: 2 maximum i… Show more

“…Considering that, it was conceivable that the use of V peak_K would help to minimize the observed differences in VO 2max once the variable is more sensitive to changes in physical training in humans (Machado et al, 2013 ; Manoel et al, 2017 ). In our study, animals trained according to vVO 2max or V peak_K had similar improvements in VO 2max.…”

“…The 70% maximum speed of training correspond to a moderate exercise session since it presents a high correlation with VO 2max . (Manoel et al, 2017 ). Training sessions began at 6 a.m. (lights on), consisting of 1 session per day, 5 times a week (Monday to Friday).…”

“…In the end phase (9600-10000 m), there was also no difference between CER and PLA (17 ± 4.1 vs 18 ± 2.7; P = 0.343). recommended for exercise prescription and monitoring 9,[19][20][21] . Thus, the improvement of these variables would possibly cause an improved performance.…”

“…However, the identification of T max requires an additional test which adds to the impracticality of the GXT. Nevertheless, , and T max have been shown to be useful and viable parameters in running training and performance (Billat and Koralsztein 1996 ; Esfarjani and Laursen 2007 ; Manoel et al 2017 ; Smith et al 2003 ) and can be used to prescribe training and assess training adaptation. If similar metrics for training prescription could be acquired from the SPV, in a singular test, it would demonstrate utility over and above traditional GXT assessment of , especially as the SPV is an effective test for highly trained runners (Hogg et al 2015 ; Scheadler and Devor 2015 ), and has good test–retest reliability (Jenkins et al 2017a ).…”
