Peach Fruit Abscission as Influenced by Applied Gibberellin and Seed Development1

Abstract: Postbloom application of gibberellin A3 (GA3) to open pollinated peach trees prevented seed development in some fruit, and also resulted in the persistence and maturation of both seeded and seedless fruit on the same trees. GA3 temporarily promoted fruit growth and delayed abscission of both seeded and seedless fruit, but the final crop load was not altered. Both seeded and seedless fruit abscised from treated trees during physiological drop. The persisting seedless fruit, therefore, competed successfully with… Show more

“…The pronounced abscission of parthenocarpic fruit during June drop may be the result of increased competition (17) among the large population set (Table 1) and depletion of the applied growth substances (mainly auxins) that initially shifted the hormonal TIME AFTER FULL BLOOM (days) Fig. 2.…”

“…Definitive information regarding the duration of the requirement for viable seeds is lacking. Stembridge (21) has suggested that peach fruit become independent of seed function shortly after establishment of a metabolic gradient. In the apple a similar situation may exist.…”
