Peach Flowering Response as Related to Time of Gibberellin Application1

Abstract: Gibberellic acid (GA3) was applied at 75 ppm to mature ‘Redskin‘ peach trees at various times during the summer and fall. Flowering was reduced by GA3, the degree of reduction depending on time of application. Two response peaks were evident: the first occurred with application in early summer, at the time of flower initiation; the second occurred in late summer and resulted from mortality of developing flower buds. Application of GA3 shortly before leaf fall caused the most retardation of flower development t… Show more

“…The latter indication was fully confirmed by the hormone profiling, showing a general increasing trend of GAs levels (Fig. 6 ), especially for GA 3 and GA 7 [ 22 , 24 – 26 , 28 , 29 , 94 ]. Besides the activation of GAs biosynthesis and signal transduction pathways shown through the KEGG maps (Additional File 9 ), the correlative network pointed out that GA 4 and GA 7 may control the expression of genes mainly dealing with “ cellular macromolecule biosynthetic process ” and “ generation of precursor metabolites and energy ”, respectively.…”

“…GA3 has also been reported to affect bloom date in peach. Corgan and Widmoyer (3), and Painter and Stembridge (8 ), found that fall application of GA3 could retard flower bud development the following spring. Other workers (5), however, reported that ethe phon and GA3 treatments were not commer cially useful, either because of a lack of response, or side effects which drastically reduced yield.…”

“…The failure of GA3 to delay flowering may have been due to the late application date. Some evidence exists that GA3 can affect both floral initiation as well as differentiation of floral primordia (8 ), and these events might have been completed prior to GA3 treatment.…”
