Peacekeeping the Game

Abstract: Political science students face the difficult challenge of understanding the obstacles to resolving intrastate conflict. Often, instructors will use negotiation-based role-playing simulations to model arduous discussions between the warring groups and intervening parties. However, the long-term challenges of directing peacebuilding and ensuring security are equally important parts of intrastate conflict resolution that remain unaddressed in current simulations. The design of simulations with board-game-like ru… Show more

“…These clearly defined rules do not require students to read into their roles but rather place them in a more stable environment with the kind of structure students prefer. Though they do not use off-the-shelf board games, a small handful of ''board-game-like'' simulations use these types of rules (Asal 2005;Bridge 2013;Bridge and Radford 2013;Goon 2011;Thomas 2002;Young 2006). I go beyond these ''board-game-like'' simulations to call for actual, popular off-the-shelf board games.…”

“…This proved a good way to encourage friendly competition. While others have used marginal extra credit to help the operation of a simulation (Endersby and Shaw 2009;Goon 2011;Raymond 2012), perhaps this is another subtle way to spur friendly competition.…”

“…Various scholars have advocated for a new breed of games, including "off -the-shelf " board games (Bridge 2014 ), "board-game-like" games (Goon 2011 ), and those with "explicit rule-based" structures (Asal 2005 ;Bridge 2013 ;Raymond 2012 , 76). This article adds to those eff orts by proposing the use of fantasy drafts.…”
