“…However, our observations are consistent with those of Nielsen (1990), who observed a strong linear relationship between adult weevil density and foliar damage in faba beans when 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 pairs of weevils were added to cages housing 32 plants. Lohaus and Vidal (2010) did not observe a strong positive relationship between weevil density and foliar damage in Þeld peas when weevil densities were 2.2 and 14.9 weevils per m 2 , which they attributed to temperature-dependent feeding (see Landon et al 1995) and the tendency of adult weevils to be spatially aggregated in Þeld pea crops (see Schotzko and Quisenberry 1999). Contrary to the conclusion of Lohaus and Vidal (2010), our results suggest that foliar damage to Þeld pea plants can be used to estimate weevil density and to monitor S. lineatus infestation of Þeld pea crops, as Nielsen (1990) concluded for faba beans.…”
