Pd/NbOPO4 Multifunctional Catalyst for the Direct Production of Liquid Alkanes from Aldol Adducts of Furans

Abstract: Great efforts have been made to convert renewable biomass into transportation fuels. Herein, we report the novel properties of NbO(x)-based catalysts in the hydrodeoxygenation of furan-derived adducts to liquid alkanes. Excellent activity and stability were observed with almost no decrease in octane yield (>90% throughout) in a 256 h time-on-stream test. Experimental and theoretical studies showed that NbO(x) species play the key role in C-O bond cleavage. As a multifunctional catalyst, Pd/NbOPO4 plays three r… Show more

“…Jet fuel is one of the most often used transport fuels nowadays. Pioneered by the previous work of Dumesic91011, Huber1213, Corma1415 and their groups, the synthesis of jet fuel range alkanes with the lignocellulose derived platform chemicals has drawn tremendous attention1617181920.…”

“…[21][22][23] The catalytic performance of Pd/NbOPO 4 for the direct hydrodeoxygenation of C 15 oxygenates is shown in Table 5. [23][24][25] The total yield of alkanes reaches a maximum (total yield of 97.0 %, the yields of C 14 and C 15 alkanes are 5.6 and 91.4 %, respectively) at 220 8C, 24 h with 5 wt % Pd/NbOPO 4 as catalyst. Shortening the reaction time or reducing the reaction temperature or redicing the Pd loading would all result in a slight decrease in alkane yields to about 90 %.…”

“…Based on the recent studies, this catalyst produced C 8 and C 12 alkanes from bioderived furfural and HMF, respectively, through aldol-condensation and hydrogenation reactions [54,55]. One of these studies revealed that the appropriate reaction temperature and residence period for hydrogenation/reduction process as 120°C and 6 h [54].…”
