BACKGROUND The formation of carboxylic acid, especially oxalic acid (OA), limits the complete mineralization of organic pollutant in both ozonation and catalytic ozonation. Bimetallic catalyst is well known for its catalytic activity. In this study, bimetallic Fe‐Cu‐MCM‐41 is synthesized to accelerate ozone decomposition to ·OH and enhance OA degradation. RESULTS After the employment of Fe‐Cu‐MCM‐41/O3, 95% OA was removed at 60 min, which was much higher than that in Fe‐MCM‐41/O3 (23.4%), Cu‐MCM‐41/O3 (69.7%) and a single ozonation process (16.5%). Using pyridine adsorption–IR, ESR and XPS, a relationship was found between catalytic activity of catalysts, Lewis acid sites and electron transfer effect. OA degradations were found to follow a hydroxyl radical mechanism. The Fe‐Cu‐MCM‐41/O3 process was sensitive to pH value; a higher removal efficiency was achieved under alkaline conditions. Fe‐Cu‐MCM‐41 significantly accelerated ozone decomposition, hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide generation. CONCLUSIONS Co‐incorporating Fe and Cu successfully increased the number of Lewis acid sites on MCM‐41. Electron transfers between Fe(II/III), Cu(I/II) and O3 were also found. The joint function of Lewis sites and the electron transfer effect enhanced ·OH generation and OA degradation. Fe‐Cu‐MCM‐41 showed bright prospects for use in water treatment processes. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry

A series of Pt/WOx-ZrO2-TiO2 catalysts with different Ti/Zr molar ratios was prepared by an evaporation induced self-assembly method, and used to efficient hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1-PO and 1,3-PDO. BET, XRD, Raman, TEM, XPS and Py-IR were employed to characterize the physicochemical properties of the catalysts. The structural and acidic properties of the catalysts were affected by the Ti/Zr ratio of the support ZrO2-TiO2. Two new crystalline phases of ZrTiO4 and Ti2ZrO6 and the amount of acid sites were detected in the Pt/WOx-ZrO2-TiO2 catalysts. 1-PO is dominant in all products of glycerol hydrogenolysis over the supported Pt-WOx catalysts, which is attributed to more Lewis acid sites on the catalyst surface. The Pt/WOx-ZrO2-TiO2 catalyst with a Ti/Zr ratio of 7/3 showed the highest 1,3-PDO yield (25.3%) and 1-PO yield (42.3%), due to its more acid sites including Brønsted and Lewis, and higher concentration of surface Pt0.

A series of APTMS ((3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane)-modified silicate MCM-41 adsorbents ( x-APTMS/MCM-41, x is the volume of APTMS per 1 g of silicate MCM-41) with different APTMS contents was prepared, and the effects of APTMS content on the desulfurization performance of the APTMS/MCM-41 adsorbents were studied in a fixed adsorption bed using H2S and N2 mixture as a model gas. The as-prepared adsorbents were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, N2 adsorption–desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The results showed that all the APTMS-modified x-APTMS/MCM-41 adsorbents retained the mesoporous silica structure of MCM-41. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller-specific surface area of x-APTMS/MCM-41 increased slightly with increasing x at first and then decreased with further increasing APTMS content. The H2S removal performances of x-APTMS/MCM-41 adsorbents decreased in the order 0.6-APTMS/MCM-41 > 0.7-APTMS/MCM-41 > 0.5-APTMS/MCM-41 > 0.4-APTMS/MCM-41 > 0.8-APTMS/MCM-41. At x = 0.6, the maximum H2S removal rate of 54.2% and H2S saturated capacity of 134.4 mg g−1 were observed. The regeneration experiment of 0.6-APTMS/MCM-41 adsorbent after three times regeneration at 423 K for 3 h in nitrogen confirmed that it possessed a good regenerability.
