Cities face challenges due to climate change, including extreme weather events and increasing GHG emissions. In this context, recycling emerges as an essential tool to promote urban resilience, reduce carbon emissions, and promote a circular economy. Thus, the objective was to examine the role of recycling as an integral part of urban adaptation and greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation strategies. The methodology included consultations with articles and legislation on the subject, as well as exploring examples of good practices from industries and effective policies that highlight the benefits of integrating recycling into adaptation and mitigation initiatives in cities. The results demonstrate the importance of effective recycling policies and practices to build climate-resilient cities and promote a transition to a low-carbon economy.

Private conservation lands are essential for protecting biodiversity, but few national‐level studies have assessed their coverage and the legal frameworks that support them. Here, we review the legal mechanisms enabling conservation on private lands in Brazil and evaluate these lands' potential to reinforce the national protected area system. We found that conserving native vegetation on private lands is the most important mechanism to protect biodiversity in five out of the six Brazilian biomes. Because Brazil has a law that mandates landowners to set aside conservation areas, remnants of native vegetation were protected rather than converted to other land uses in areas of old economic frontiers. These remnants can be the cornerstones of effective regional conservation systems. Still, upgrading these remnants to privately protected areas and integrating these privately protected areas into the national protected area system remains a challenge. We suggest that the Brazilian experience provides important lessons on how other countries can design innovative policies to recognize and expand private land conservation.

Resumo: Devido aos impactos ambientais e custos de coleta, transporte e disposição final de resíduos sólidos domiciliares, a compostagem descentralizada da fração orgânica desses resíduos (próximo à fonte geradora como condomínios, escolas, restaurantes etc.) representa uma estratégia financeira, social e ambiental atraente. A compostagem descentralizada é recomendada principalmente para países em desenvolvimento, nos quais, a maior porcentagem do lixo gerado é constituída de matéria orgânica passível de compostagem. O objetivo do presente estudo foi testar e aprimorar um reator de compostagem de aeração forçada com fluxo ascendente para tratar resíduos de cozinha de restaurantes de uma área turística e portuária na cidade de Kalmar, na Suécia. O equipamento foi originalmente desenvolvido por um grupo de técnicos e pesquisadores suecos com a capacidade para processar aproximadamente 120 kg dia -1 . O estudo, com vistas à tropicalização da mencionada tecnologia fez parte de um projeto mais amplo de cooperação entre a antiga Universidade de Kalmar (atualmente Linnaeus University) e a Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). O presente artigo baseou-se nos resultados obtidos durante o período de treinamento e teste do reator, no verão europeu, para o tratamento dos resíduos orgânicos provenientes de três restaurantes de pequeno porte localizados na marina, e cujos resíduos orgânicos apresentavam alto percentual de carboidratos, gordura e frutas cítricas, característico das comidas servidas no local.Palavras-chave: compostagem, reator de aeração forçada, pH, resíduo orgânico domiciliar.
