Payment for Environmental Services: Guidelines for Identifying Priority Areas Focusing on Biodiversity*

Abstract: The economic tool of Payment for Environmental Services (PES) has been considered as an alternative for the conservation of the biodiversity and ecosystem services in private lands. To guide decision makers in implementing PES schemes, this paper aimed to identify in the scientific literature the important elements to prioritize areas in the implementation of PES-biodiversity schemes. It is claimed that the elements extracted from PES-biodiversity schemes must be used as a reference to guide the implementation… Show more

“…The permeability of the concepts is such that certain authors treat them as synonyms, without losing the literary sense (Picharillo and Ranieri, 2019), but the same authors make clear the differences in the concepts when they state that Environmental Services are intrinsic to Ecosystem Services, however, Ecosystem Services do not depend on the Environmental Service to exist. Environmental Services are generated through human actions, while the Ecosystem Service stems from natural origins.…”

“…Landowners can protect more lands than the NVPL requires and may trade their surplus with those who have a conservation deficit in their properties. The law outlines compensation and offset mechanisms such as the Cota de Reserva Ambiental and Servidão Ambiental to guide such transactions (Silva & Ranieri, 2014). However, this potential market is still underdeveloped (Soares-Filho et al, 2014).…”

“…O provimento dos serviços ecossistêmicos, tanto a quantidade quanto a qualidade são diretamente dependentes da diversidade de espécies, genes e ecossistemas (TEEB, 2010). O declínio da biodiversidade afeta o provimento desses serviços que são fundamentais para o bem-estar e saúde da humanidade (DÍAZ et al, 2006;PICHARILLO;RANIERI, 2019).…”
