Pavement energy harvesting technologies: a critical review

Abstract: The world energy consumption is constantly increasing and the research point towards novel energy harvesting technologies. In the field of pavement engineering, the exploitable sources are the solar radiation and the vehicle load. At present, these systems are able to convert the sunlight into electricity thanks to some solar cells placed under a semi-transparent layer (photovoltaic roads), or they can harvest thermal heat by means of solar thermal systems. The thermal gradient of the pavement can be exploited… Show more

“…The authors point out the potentially wide application scope of this solution, however, moving to the stage of common applications requires a number of further studies. In the article [ 29 ] published in 2021, the authors review and analyze energy harvesting systems from road pavements, which have with a hybrid structure. A road surface with an increased temperature can be used to generate electricity using thermoelectric transducers, it is also possible to build a heat exchanger into the road surface and heat buildings using heat pumps.…”

“…The asphalt solar collectors allow for the reduction of the temperature of the pavement, mitigating the heat asphalt and slowing down the rutting. The extracted energy is usually used as a snow-melting system 5 or in heating for buildings. 6 Recently, some researchers investigated the possibility of replacing the asphalt solar collectors with a porous medium.…”
