and Summary This report describes factors influencing the attainment of orgasm in the stump‐tailed macaque in the laboratory. In the male, penile stimulation during copulation was not a sufficient condition for orgasm to occur; successful copulation had to be preceded by a high level of excitement triggered by various psychosocial factors. In the female, stereotypic signs of high sexual excitement were invariably displayed during copulation at the time of male orgasm and also during homosexual interactions which did not provide genital stimulation. The observations suggest that female orgasm results from high responsiveness to the overall behaviour of the excited partner. Zusammenfassung Dieser Bericht beschreibt Faktoren, die bei im Labor lebenden Stummelschwanz‐Makaken (Macaca arctoides) zum Orgasmus führen. Beim Männchen war die Penisreizung während der Kopulation keine ausreichende Bedingung für das Auftreten eines Orgasmus; einer erfolgreichen Kopulation muß ein hoher Grad an Erregung, ausgelöst durch verschiedene psychosoziale Faktoren, vorausgehen. Das Weibchen zeigte gleichbleibend stereotype Zeichen hoher sexueller Erregung während der Kopulation zum Zeitpunkt des männlichen Orgasmus und ebenso während homosexueller Interaktionen ohne genitale Reizung. Die Beobachtungen scheinen darauf hinzuweisen, daß das Weibchen während der Kopulation infolge seiner hohen Empfänglichkeit für das Gesamtverhalten des erregten Partners mit der Ejakulation des Männchens einen Orgasmus erfährt.

The major genital responses of arousal in women are vasocongestion, resulting in tumescence of the vaginal walls, and vaginal lubrication, facilitating penile intromission and thrusting. During orgasm, several involuntary muscular reactions occur, the most adaptive being in the outer third of the vagina and the uterus. Uterine suction of the ejaculate seems to occur when the reproductive apparatus is functioning at full efficiency. Coitus may result in reflex ovulation. Indices of female nonhuman primate orgasm thus far proposed include rhythmic vaginal and anal contractions, hyperventilation, involuntary muscle tension, arm and leg spasms, grimacing, and uterine contractions. Orgasm in our species may exist as a result of phylogenetic inertia, not as a novel response selected duringprotohominid or hominid evolution. A theory for the evolutionary nature of orgasm in women states that the orgasmic vaginal contractions stimulate ejaculation. Reasons for the common asynchrony ofthis adaptive pattern are the usually lowered ejaculatory threshold because of non-species-typical orgasmic frequency in the male, and the frequently delayed female orgasm because of psychological inhibition and/or inadequate control and development of the pubococcygeus.

One large social group of each of three species of macaques (Macaca mulatta, M. fascicularis, M. radiata), housed in half-acre field cages a t the California Primate Research Center, were observed for a total of 150 h. Dataon sexual behavior and dominance interactions were recorded by pairs of experienced observers using a focal animal technique. Single or multiple mount-to-ejaculation s e quences, number of thrusts per mount, number of mounts per sequence, duration of mounts per sequence, duration of sequences, social rank and frequency of sexual activity were recorded for each adult male. M. mulatta used a multiple mount-to-ejaculation (MME) pattern in 91% of their copulations. M. radiata used a single mount-to-ejaculation (SME) pattern in 91 % of their copulations. M. fascicularis used both patterns-53% MME and 47% SME. A positive correlation was found between rank and sexual activity in fascicularis and mulatta males. A negative correlation between rank and sexual activity was found in radiata males and also a positive correlation between rank and age indicating that the youngest and most subordinate radiata males were the most sexually active males. In reviewing the literature, a relationship between degree of intermale competition, intermale tolerance and type of mounting pattern was revealed. Macaque species that primarily use an SME pattern also show a high degree of intermale tolerance and little intermale competition. Macaque species that primarily use an MME pattern typically show a high degree of intermale competition and a low degree of intermale tolerance. Possible events leading to such relationships are discussed.
