RESUMOEste trabalho objetivou avaliar a deposição de serapilheira em três formações secundárias com diferentes idades na Floresta Ombrófila Densa Submontana no Paraná. A serapilheira anual produzida foi avaliada mensalmente por 25 coletores (1 m 2 ) distribuídos sistematicamente em cada formação secundária (1 ha) e separada em frações (ramos, órgãos reprodutivos, miscelânea e folhas). Não houve diferença significativa entre as formações quanto à deposição anual de serapilheira, provavelmente devido às semelhanças entre elas com relação à estrutura da vegetação e às condições meteorológicas. A maior deposição de serapilheira total e frações ocorreu nos meses com maiores temperatura e precipitação. A fração folhas foi a mais representativa na serapilheira total em todas as formações, sendo que na floresta secundária menos desenvolvida (FS-1) houve contribuição de um menor número de espécies, quando comparada com a floresta secundária intermediária (FS-2) e a floresta secundária mais desenvolvida (FS-3).Palavras-chave: Floresta Ombrófila Densa, serapilheira, sucessão florestal. Litterfall in Secondary Forests in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest of Paraná State ABSTRACTThis research is focused in evaluating the litterfall in secondary forests of Dense Ombrophilous Submontane Forest in the coast of Paraná state. The annual litterfall produced was evaluated monthly by 25 collectors (1 m 2 ), systematically distributed in each secondary formation (1 ha) and separated into fractions (twigs, reproductive organs, remains, and leaves). There was no significant difference between the secondary formations on the annual litterfall, probably due to the similarities they both have with respect to the structure of vegetation and meteorological conditions. The highest deposition of total litter and fractions occurred in the months of highest temperature and rainfall. The fraction leaves were the most representative of total litterfall in all formations, with the less evolved secondary forests (FS-1) contributing with fewer number of species, when compared with the intermediate and more evolved secondary forests (FS-2) and (FS-3), respectively.

Seed Bank from Abandoned Pastures in the Coastal Region of Paraná

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the seed bank of three contiguous areas: pasture abandoned for ten years, with soil amended by partial beheading for two years at horizon A (area I); pasture identical to the previous example, but with recent mobilization of the topsoil (area II); area in the early stages of regeneration (area III). Field work was conducted in Morretes-PR, in an area of evergreen rain forest. In November 2013, seed bank samples were collected from ten points per area (0.30 × 0.30 m) and at three depths (0-3 cm + litter, 3.1 to 6.0 cm and 6.1 to 9.0 cm). We obtained 25.151 seeds m -2 , distributed between 85 species. The predominant life form was herbaceous (98%), with the Cyperaceae family being the most abundant. In the seed banks of the three areas, only a few seeds from a restricted number of woody species were found, which therefore, represents a limited resource for forest restoration purposes.

Litterfall and litter decomposition are vital processes in tropical forests because they regulate nutrient cycling. Nutrient cycling can be altered by forest fragmentation. The Atlantic Forest is one of the most threatened biomes in the world due to human occupation over the last 500 years. This scenario has resulted in fragments of different size, age and regeneration phase. To investigate differences in litterfall and leaf decomposition between forest successional phases, we compared six forest fragments at three different successional phases and an area of mature forest on the Atlantic Plateau of Sao Paulo, Brazil. We sampled litter monthly from November 2008 to October 2009. We used litterbags to calculate leaf decomposition rate of an exotic species, Tipuana tipu (Fabaceae), over the same period litter sampling was performed. Litterfall was higher in the earliest successional area. This pattern may be related to the structural properties of the forest fragments, especially the higher abundance of pioneer species, which have higher productivity and are typical of early successional areas. However, we have not found significant differences in the decomposition rates between the studied areas, which may be caused by rapid stabilization of the decomposition environment (combined effect of microclimatic conditions and the decomposers activities). This result indicates that the leaf decomposition process have already been restored to levels observed in mature forests after a few decades of regeneration, although litterfall has not been entirely restored. This study emphasizes the importance of secondary forests for restoration of ecosystem processes on a regional scale.
