Patterns and drivers of disturbance in tropical forest reserves of southern Ghana

Abstract: Ghana has retained a substantial area of tropical forests in an extensive network of protected reserves. These forests are impacted by land uses such as logging, mining, and agriculture as well as wildfires. We studied forest disturbance and recovery from 2013 to 2020 using annual maps of forest cover derived from Landsat imagery. Fire-associated disturbance was distinguished using VIIRS active fire data. We used boosted regression trees to model disturbances in closed and open forests as a function of climate… Show more

“…VIIRS data serve a wide range of applications in addition to weather and climate research, contributing to better understanding of large-scale land cover changes. These include regional droughts, wildfires, floods, and applications like crop prediction, food security, urban expansion, forest die off, increasing or decreasing agricultural land [ 193 , 194 , 195 , 196 ]. VIIRS provides data for agricultural management, fire monitoring [ 197 ] gas flaring [ 198 ], and maritime forecasting products for navigating sea ice and support fishing [ 191 ].…”

“…Fire was estimated to drive 25% of the net biomass exchange in tropical Africa in response to responses to El Niño in 2015 (Liu et al, 2017). Fire accounted for 45% of the total area of forest loss and degradation in Ghana during the 2016 El Niño drought versus <10% in other years (Wanyama et al, 2023).…”

“…Shifting agriculture is one of the primary drivers of forest loss in tropical regions (Curtis et al, 2018). The disturbance of tropical forests for agricultural purposes can promote edge effects and the isolation of forest patches (Malhi et al 2014;Wanyama et al 2023). Distance to source populations and the amount of forest left at different radii are critical factors influencing how animals mediate key ecosystem functions such as seed dispersal, pollination, host plant defense, predation, parasitism, and decomposition (Lundberg & Moberg, 2003;Tylianakis & Morris, 2017).…”
