Patterns and determinants of wood physical and mechanical properties across major tree species in China

Abstract: The physical and mechanical properties of wood affect the growth and development of trees, and also act as the main criteria when determining wood usage. Our understanding on patterns and controls of wood physical and mechanical properties could provide benefits for forestry management and bases for wood application and forest tree breeding. However, current studies on wood properties mainly focus on wood density and ignore other wood physical properties. In this study, we established a comprehensive database … Show more

“…, Zhu et al. ), climatic indices were selected as potential determinants of global forest heights; the climatic indices include four temperature indices (annual mean temperature [AMT], mean temperature of the wettest quarter [MTWQ], mean temperature of the driest quarter [MTDQ], and mean temperature of the coldest quarter [MTCQ]) and four moisture indices (annual precipitation [AP], precipitation of the wettest month [PWM], the difference between annual precipitation and annual potential evapotranspiration [P−PET], and the difference between annual precipitation and annual actual evapotranspiration [P−AET]). Other climatic indices were not used because of their high correlations with the chosen ones.…”

“…Exploring the associations of nutrient content across organs may be a way to reveal the allocation strategies of nutrients for tree species. From the ontogenetic perspective, plant nutrient contents across organs are tightly coordinated, and their associations can be examined by scaling relationship analyses 2 6 7 10 . Scaling relationships among plant traits are widely studied, mainly in two ways: relationship of different traits within a specific organ and relationship of the same traits among organs.…”

“…Večinoma razvrščajo pajesen med vrste z nekoliko slabšimi mehanskimi lastnostmi, čeprav Becker (2009) poroča o primerljivih vrednos:h z javorjem, hrastom, jesenom in brezo. Tudi ameriški raziskovalci (Alden, 1995;Moslemi & Bhagwat, 1970) lastnos: in uporabnost pajesena primerjajo s srednje gos:mi listavci, enako potrjuje tudi širša raziskava, opravljena na Kitajskem (Zhu et al, 2015).…”
