Introduction: Suicide has been ranked among the top ten major causes of death worldwide. Self-poisoning throughout all ages is listed as one of the principal causes of unnatural deaths. Aim: Analysis of the pattern of suicidal self-poisoning cases with emphasis on its relationship with personality traits among admitted cases to Menoufia Poisoning Control Center (MPCC). Method: This was a cross-sectional, prospective study conducted on 1069 cases of suicidal self-poisoned cases attended to MPCC in one year. Data were collected including sociodemographic criteria, type of poison used, the severity of cases according to poisoning severity score, reasons for committing suicide, and the outcome. A personality questionnaire was fulfilled, which consisted of five personality traits: Extroversion, Agreeableness, Neuroticism, Openness, and Conscientiousness. Results: Total number of 1069 suicidal self-poisoning cases were admitted to MPCC over one year. The highest number of them was between 10-20 years (38.4%). Females were more susceptible to suicidal poisoning than males. 78.7% were from rural areas; being single is a high-risk factor. The highest percentage of cases were students, and family troubles were the most common motive in attempting suicide, followed by economic and financial issues. Pesticides were the most used poison. 25.4% of cases were severe according to PSS, and the fatality rate reached 15.9%, where aluminum phosphide was the first claiming agent in this high death rate. Personality trait was a significant factor among people who attempted suicide with a significant difference regarding the gender and type of the used poison. Conclusion: Suicide self-poisoning is a considerable public health risk that should be given high attention; the most common age was between (10-20) years. Females were more susceptible than males. Most cases were from rural areas. Most of them were students, and family troubles were the most common motive for attempting suicide. Pesticides were the most used poison, and the fatality rate reached 15.9%. Personality traits are a significant risk factor among people who attempt suicide.

The study aimed to determine the influence of the levels of education among people that committed suicide by the use of chemical substances. Data were collected from 2 groups of subjects investigated at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Cluj-Napoca, between January 2012 and December 2016. The first group consisted of 20 deceased persons that committed suicide by chemical substances and the second group consisted of 13 persons that attempted suicide by chemical substances. We investigated the following data: gender, age and type of toxic substance, level of education, field of study, existence of mental illness or other attempts. Age was statistically significantly higher in successful suicides versus suicides attempts. The rest of the variables did not differ statistically significantly between groups, although a higher percentage of subjects with psychiatric illness were observed in the completed suicides group. Also, a higher percentage of subjects who attempted to commit suicide with combination of alcohol and other chemical substances were observed, without achieving statistical significance. We also analyzed the differences within the group with completed suicide subjects from the point of view of their studies. Although we did not get a statistical significance because of the low number of subjects, there were a few associations that slightly exceeded the statistical significance threshold. Thus, those without higher education have used alcohol more frequently in combination with medication, and those with higher education have preferred medication alone. The obtained results may have implications for the targeted prevention of suicides by chemical substances.

Buscou- se caracterizar o perfil da morbimortalidade de adolescentes por intoxicação exógena no Brasil na última década. Trata-se de uma análise documental, descritiva, de série temporal com abordagem quantitativa, realizada no mês de agosto de 2020, através do Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN) do Departamento de Informática do Sistema único de Saúde (DATASUS). Processaram- se os dados nos programas: TabWin versão 4.14, Microsoft Excel versão 2016 e Microsoft Office. Constatou- se o total de 198.367 notificações no período de 2010 a 2019. A região Sudeste e o estado de São Paulo ocuparam o primeiro lugar com 95.250 e 37.916 registros respectivamente. Os casos se concentraram na zona urbana (87,62%) e na faixa etária entre 15 a 19 anos (73,40%). O sexo feminino foi o mais expressivo (67,25%) e a raça branca prevaleceu (40,03%). O medicamento foi o principal agente tóxico (53,53%) e a tentativa de suicídio a principal circunstância (52,01%). A maior parte das exposições foi do tipo aguda- única (65,49%), sendo o critério de confirmação mais utilizado, o clínico (63,31%). Um total de 155.915 casos evoluiu para cura sem sequela e 131.237 foram classificados como intoxicação confirmada. A intoxicação exógena em adolescentes no Brasil tem como protagonistas meninas brancas, com idade entre 15 a 19 anos, moradoras da zona urbana das grandes cidades, que utilizam como método de tentativa de suicídio altas doses de medicamentos de forma abrupta e única.
