Sex differences in chronic pain are well established with documented predominance in women. This study assessed relationships between age at menarche and chronic pain, site-specific chronic pain, pain characteristics, and chronic widespread pain (CWP). We used data from the Tromsø Study conducted in 2007 to 2008 and 2015 to 2016 (Tromsø 6 and Tromsø 7 waves) including participants aged 30 to 99 years. The associations between age at menarche and chronic pain were examined in Tromsø 6 (n 5 6449), Tromsø 7 (n 5 5681), and the combination of Tromsø 6 and Tromsø 7 (n 5 12,130). Tromsø 7 data were used further to examine the associations between age at menarche and site-specific chronic pain, 4 pain characteristics (pain duration, pain intensity, episode duration, and episode frequency), and CWP. All analyses were adjusted for body mass index, age, and economic status of the household in childhood. Lower age at menarche was associated with an increased risk of chronic pain in all 3 samples (risk ratio for each year delay in menarche 0.98, 95% CI [0.97 to 0.99] across samples). Risk differences were 20.014, CI 95% (20.02 to 20.005) in Tromsø 6, 20.011, CI 95% (20.02 to 20.02) in Tromsø 7, and 20.012, CI 95% (20.02 to 20.01) in the combined sample. Age at menarche was significantly associated with chronic pain in the neck, abdomen, and both arms, and CWP. Of the 4 pain characteristics, pain duration was statistically significant. We conclude that early menarche is an independent risk factor for pain across a broad spectrum of pain outcomes.

Background Adolescence is associated with rapid changes in behavioral patterns which affect the functioning of the person in adulthood. The purpose of this research was to study the emotional and behavioral problems of 9–18-year-old girls and their relationship to menarche age. This cross-sectional study was done on girls aged 9–18 years old in Shiraz city. A cluster sampling method was used to select about 2000 students in 2015. Then, a questionnaire including demographic characteristics and strengths and difficulties (SDQ) was completed for each of them. The SPSS software was used to analyze the collected data via descriptive statistics and chi-square tests. Results Among the 2000 tested samples, the highest mean and standard deviation (4.2 ± 2.25) were related to emotional symptoms. Most of them (960 individuals = 48%) scored abnormally. The mean and standard deviation was 15.61 ± 5.89, and the highest value was 33. The highest mean and standard deviation (16.69 ± 5.4) ranged from 17 to 18 years old in 289 subjects. There was a significant relationship between the age of menarche and emotional and behavioral problems (p = 0.001). Most individuals (638 subjects) (46%) had abnormal emotional and behavioral problems in the menarche age of 11–12 years old. Conclusion Emotional symptoms were the most common emotional-behavioral problems of adolescents. There was a significant relationship between the menarche age and emotional and behavioral problems. It is necessary to be familiar with the problems of adolescent girls during adolescence and the way to deal with their problems.

Pubertas adalah masa perubahan antara masa kanak-kanak dengan remaja, ditandai dengan perubahan jasmani yang dinamis sehingga menyebabkan perubahan fisik, psikologis dan perilaku. Pubertas pada seorang perempuan diawali dengan thelarce, kemudian pubarche, dan memuncak dengan terjadinya menarche. Pada tahun 2010 berdasarkan Riset Kesehatan Dasar di Kalimantan Barat didapatkan sebanyak 20,5% anak perempuan mengalami menarche dini terjadi pada usia 11-12 tahun, dan sebanyak 0,7% terjadi pada usia 9-10 tahun. Berdasarkan tinjauan Pustaka, olahraga, obesitas, dan asupan makanan seperti junk food merupakan faktor-faktor yang berperan terhadap menarche dini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat hubungan antara olahraga, status gizi dan asupan junk food terhadap kejadian menarche dini pada siswi SMP di Kalimantan Barat. Penelitian ini bersifat analitik dengan desain potong lintang, dan pengambilan sampel dilakukan secara consecutive sampling. Subyek penelitian berjumlah 117 siswi. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan kuesioner online. Hasil analisis Chi-Square didapatkan hubungan antara menarche dini dengan status gizi lebih-obese (p<0,05); frekuensi asupan junk food lebih dari 1 kali (p<0,05); asupan lemak (p<0,05); dan tidak ada hubungan antara menarche dini dengan olahraga rutin dan frekuensi olahraga; asupan natrium (p>0,05) dan asupan gula (p>0,05). Kesimpulan didapatkan bahwa menarche dini dipengaruhi oleh faktor seperti status gizi lebih-obese, frekuensi asupan junk-food yang berlebihan dan asupan lemak.

Abstract: The mean menarche age has been decreasing in cities. Therefore, it seems necessary for the families to be aware about the influence of time, trend and affecting factors on menarche; this helps them to make good decisions when educating their teenagers.
