Patient satisfaction with anaesthesia - Part 2: Construction and quality assessment of questionnaires

Abstract: Summary The construction of a new, valid and reliable questionnaire to measure patient satisfaction is a complex and time‐consuming task. It must follow a rigorous, step‐by‐step approach, and should as a minimum include elements of content validity, criterion validity, construct validity and reliability. The objective of this review is to present a protocol for the construction of a psychometric questionnaire, supplemented by practical aspects for researchers and clinicians.

“…However, even by combining all five answers to an overall percentage score, we did not obtain a fairly symmetric distribution. It might be argued that it is not possible to achieve a symmetrical distribution with general questions about patient satisfaction [32,33], rendering the selection of the questions used for the national benchmark disputable.…”

“…Assessment of satisfaction requires psychometrically derived tools rather than the solitary global question often included in recovery tools , with the latter often being poorly defined . Few satisfaction tools are statistically robust , although the Peri‐operative Anaesthetic Care Questionnaire and the Leiden Peri‐operative Care Patient Satisfaction questionnaire report both exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. However, patient satisfaction should not be neglected, is a fundamental component of quality of care assessment , and is increasingly studied using instruments such as the EuroQol‐5 Dimensions (see http://www.euroqol.org).…”

“…All groups used questionnaires that they had developed themselves using rigorous protocols involving validation at different levels and measurement of reliability. Construction and quality assessment of questionnaires are important, but are outside the scope of this review and will be dealt with in the second part of this review .…”
