Patient‐reported outcome measures for allergy and asthma in children

Abstract: There is increasing recognition of the importance of patient's perceptions of disease and their assessments of heathcare processes. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are therefore now regarded as at least as important as the traditional objective measures of disease. For minors, parental and, except in the very young and severally cognitively impaired, the child's perspectives are important because they provide unique and complementary information. In this review, we summarize the evidence on PROMs for… Show more

“…Caregivers are less able than children to accurately assess response to treatment with available tools. A simple pediatric‐specific tool to assess efficacy in allergic rhinitis trials in children is needed [92–95 ]. In older adults, very few studies have investigated PROs, but visual analogue scales appear to be of interest [92, 96, 97 ]. Stratification of patients allowing precision medicine Precision medicine is a medical model aiming to deliver customized healthcare—with medical decisions, practices, and/or products tailored to the individual patient.…”

“…[2][3][4] The need for patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to monitor symptom severity, assess impact of treatment, and track outcomes is increasingly acknowledged, and advances in technology have made collection of patient-reported data feasible. 5,6 This review summarizes the most commonly used outpatient asthma quality measures for application at the practice and health plan level. It discusses the limitations of existing measures and considers the advantages and challenges of adopting a PROM of asthma control.…”

“…Patient reported-outcomes measures (PROMs) are used to analyze a range of outcomes that assess the impact of diseases or clinical interventions including health or functional status, HRQoL, wellbeing, satisfaction and perceived quality of health care, and there are numerous generic and diseasespecific PROMs. 5 There are generic PROMs, which are instruments for assessing patients 'perceptions, both those with and without a disease, and although they may allow the comparison of patients' perceptions with different diseases, they do not allow a description of perceptions of specific diseases, as opposed to those specific to a particular disease. 5 HRQoL is known to be a multidimensional and subjective construct that captures life experience in the individual's physical, emotional, psychological and social aspects, as well as health perceptions that intersect with the World Health Organization's definition of health.…”
