Patient-reported long-term outcome following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in pediatric chronic myeloid leukemia

Abstract: BackgroundPediatric CML is very rare. Before the introduction of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) from a donor -if available- was the standard cure attempt. Data on the long-term outcome and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in former pediatric CML patients undergoing HSCT are lacking.Study questionWe investigated long-term survivors’ self-reporting to a questionnaire sent out to patients formerly enrolled in pediatric CML-HSCT trials.MethodsIndi… Show more

“…All surviving patients are GvHD‐free and have stopped immunosuppression, with Lansky/Karnofsky performance scores of 90%–100%. The 13% incidence of severe chronic GvHD in our cohort is high, given that a self‐reported satisfactory physical health is perceived only in the absence of chronic GvHD 59 . However, health‐related quality of life is also impaired after long‐term use of TKI 60 .…”

“…The 13% incidence of severe chronic GvHD in our cohort is high, given that a self-reported satisfactory physical health is perceived only in the absence of chronic GvHD. 59 However, health-related quality of life is also impaired after long-term use of TKI. 60 Furthermore, it is not the chronic pattern per se which impairs patient-perceived health status but the organ involvement and the duration of chronic GVHD, which responded to corticosteroids in all of our patients.…”

“…The male patients indicated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism after irradiation. Nevertheless, this study has a limitation in that it depends on a questionnaire that relies on the selfidentification of infertility [58].…”

“…Therefore, we retrospectively analyzed the pooled data from the worldwide registry on pediatric CML and from the national German registry CML-paed comprising 628 and 199 patients, respectively, of patients aged ≤18 years at diagnosis of CML [14,40]. Both registries already have provided valuable knowledge on specific findings when comparing adult to pediatric CML [10,[55][56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66]. From these cohorts we here now present information on cases with priapism and their clinical features, therapy applied, and long-term outcome.…”
