Patient Expectation and Satisfaction After Macular Hole Surgery

Abstract: In the dissatisfied patients, expectation was significantly higher, and subjective assessment of vision after surgery was lower than in satisfied patients, although they had similar improvement in BCVA. Visual acuity and patient satisfaction are not always directly correlated. An important factor in patient satisfaction is expectation.

“…However, the degree of benefit regarding hearing obtained with a CI, based on hearing measurements, varies between individuals [6,7]. There are reports from other specialities, such as ophthalmology and orthopaedics, saying that unrealistic or too high expectations tend to have negative effects on the self-reported benefit of interventions [8,9]. Thus, it is important to examine, what kind of expectations CI-candidates had, which of these came true and which did not.…”

“…Previous studies in other research fields showed that patients with high expectations of treatment outcomes were more likely to present better outcomes after treatment, in comparison with patients with low treatment expectations [ 22 25 ]. In contrast, other research showed that high expectations can have a negative association with the self-reported benefit of interventions [ 26 , 27 ]. The existence of contradicting evidence about the correlation between high expectations and treatment outcomes suggests that this correlation might be determined by the investigated condition or disorder.…”

“…17 The patient rated his satisfaction with the overall results on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 = none, 10 = maximum satisfaction). 19 Surgery was performed using general anesthesia through a 3.5-mm scleral tunnel incision at the 12 o'clock position. The anterior chamber was filled with 1% sodium hyaluronate (Provisc), which was completely removed at the end of the surgery.…”
