From isolation and dependence to autonomy – expectations before and experiences after cochlear implantation in adult cochlear implant users and their significant others

Abstract: Before implantation it is important to discuss the fact that phone calls and listening to music are improvement expectations that might not be met by the CI. The perceived life changes affect the lives of both the CI-users and the significant others, a finding important to take into consideration before implantation and during rehabilitation after the implantation. “…Benefits of cochlear implantation on neuropsychiatric outcomes may be even greater: a recent prospective observational study found that cochlear implantation but not hearing aid treatment was associated with significant decreases in self-reported loneliness, particularly in those with high levels of baseline loneliness (77). Cochlear implantation also has been reported to improve cognitive performance, personal well-being, and life satisfaction (78, 79). …”

“…Another study, by Nardo et al [31], used two questionnaires to evaluate the health status (SF-36), CI-related effects on daily activities and personal satisfaction (Questionnaire for selfevaluation of CI benefit with SADL scale modification), to compare the benefits of unilateral cochlear implant in patients over 60 with a control group of younger CI recipients. Although there were some different responses to the questionnaire between groups, both showed very good result and satisfaction with CI.…”
