To quantitatively assess the retinal capillary vessel density (VD) and foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area in acute and chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) patients compared to healthy subjects using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and determine their correlation with visual acuity (VA). Methods: This was a cross-sectional, case-control study. All subjects were divided into three groups: acute CSC, chronic CSC, and healthy controls. The best-corrected VA test, optical coherence tomography, and OCTA were performed on the same day. In this study, we recorded and compared the main data of FAZ and VD in 3 × 3 mm OCTA images among three groups, also calculated the correlation between OCTA variables and VA in CSC patients. Results: A total of 148 subjects (148 eyes) were included in this study, with 50 eyes in acute CSC, 48 eyes in chronic CSC, and 50 eyes in control groups. The mean age was 50.11 ± 8.14 years. Chronic CSC had the significantly lowest VD both on the superficial and deep retina and the largest FAZ (0.39 ± 0.13 mm 2) compared to acute CSC and controls (all p < 0.05). There was no statistical difference between acute CSC and controls on VD or FAZ (both p > 0.05). In chronic CSC, both the decreased VD on deep retina and expanded FAZ were correlated with a worse VA (both p < 0.05). Conclusions: OCTA could serve as a reliable tool to evaluate different courses of CSC quantitively. In 3 × 3 mm OCTA images, both decreased VD and expanded FAZ were observed in chronic CSC patients.

Introduction: The 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) was designed to measure the vision-related quality of life (QoL). We aimed to assess the effect of disease duration, disease type (i.e., acute vs. chronic and unilateral vs. bilateral), and selected sociodemographic data on the QoL of patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Material and methods: The study included 79 patients diagnosed with CSC. The QoL was assessed using the NEI VFQ-25. The statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 24. Results: A significant positive correlation was found between deterioration in peripheral vision as assessed by the NEI VFQ-25 and duration of CSC (r =-0.22, p = 0.046). Compared with women, men obtained higher scores on the scales assessing general health, mental health, ocular pain and role limitations (p = 0.018, p = 0.027, p = 0.009 and p = 0.007, respectively). Patients with acute CSC reported higher levels of social functioning as compared with those with chronic CSC (p = 0.04). There were no differences in any of the scales between patients with unilateral and bilateral CSC. Elderly patients obtained lower scores on 9 of the 12 analyzed scales, as compared with younger patients (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Patients with CSC do not assess their QoL in negative terms, which may be related to the fact that the disease presents with transient symptoms. However, the QoL deteriorated with longer disease duration. Men with CSC have better vision-related QoL than women.

Purpose Central serous chorioretinopathy(CSCR) is a complex ocular entity that, in its chronic form, can lead to serious visual impairment and morphological damage to the retina. The aim of the current retrospective study was to evaluate the damage present after long-standing but resolved central serous chorioretinopathy and refer it to healthy individuals. Correlations between measurable factors—for example, duration of the disease, baseline retinal morphological parameters, or patient age and/or their degree of impairment—were also assessed. Materials and methods The study group consisted of thirty-two eyes (13 female and 19 male, mean age 49.6 years SD +/- 10.5) with chronic central serous chorioretinopathy ( mean duration 18.9 months SD +/- 15.4) in which complete resolution of subretinal fluid was achieved after subthreshold micropulse laser treatment. Inclusion criterion was a lack of subretinal fluid within the whole area of the central retina scanned by the spectral domain optical coherence tomography. The group was extracted out of 51 cases of chronic CSCR that were treated with that method. They were analyzed according to final best-corrected visual acuity and retinal morphological parameters as measured by spectral optical coherence tomography with angiography option (OCTA). Results were compared with the outcomes of a control group, which consisted of 40 eyes of healthy individuals with full distance visual acuity (0.0 logMAR, 1.0 Snellen) never treated with subthreshold micropulse laser. Statistical analysis included regarding correlation between final visual acuity and final central retinal thickness and retinal and functional parameters prior to treatment. Results Final best-corrected visual acuity after chronic central serous chorioretinopathy was 0.23 logMAR (0.6 Snellen) and central retinal thickness was 39.32 µm smaller than in controls. No correlation was found between final visual acuity and retinal thickness and duration of the disease, patient age, and baseline morphological retinal parameters. OCTA scans revealed impaired choriocapillaries flow signal even following resolution of the disease. Conclusion Chronic central serous chorioretinopathy is a potentially damaging clinical entity that results in serious visual impairment, retinal thinning, and choroidal flow defects. Further research is needed to determine precisely the timepoint of this damage.
