Scientific popularization genres have attracted the attention of researchers in esp. Authors of such genres have been found to employ a variety of strategies to engage the readers. However, most studies of engagement in scientific popularization tend to focus on written genres. For this reason, they have mostly examined only the linguistic mode and rarely gone beyond this to take multimodal resources into consideration. the present study investigates how multimodal semiotic resources are combined in digital media to engage the online audience in an influential online scientific popularization genre, that is, TED talks. drawing on a corpus of 28 highly viewed TED talks from the area of biology, this study provides an in-depth analysis of multimodal engagement strategies in one of those talks. the analysis shows that the engagement of online viewers in a digitally mediated scientific popularization genre like TED talks tends to be achieved by the combination of multiple semiotic resources afforded by digital technologies, such as speech, gestures, gaze, visuals, distance of shot, perspective of shot and angle of shot. the study also reveals five strategic multimodal configurations employed to achieve viewer engagement, with the focus variously on engagement through visual aids, a long shot, gaze, questions and reference to personal emotions.

Blended learning innovation of social media based active English during the COVID-19 pandemic

This study aims to describe the implementation of blended learning innovation of social mediabased (sosmed-based) English teaching in improving students' active English skill during the Covid19 Pandemic. The innovation was made by implementing the Communicative Approach which integrated elearning platforms including Be-Smart, Zoom, and Google Classroom with social media (YouTube, Instagram, Facebook). The indicators of active English skill are: students' activeness, self-confidence, and creativity and innovation in producing and uploading the videos of English practice to the social media during English classes. This research used the qualitative approach with the case study type. The subjects were PTE students of classes 2A, B, C, and D, Faculty of Education, Yogyakarta State University in the academic year of 2019-2020. The subjects were one lecturer and eight students established by using the purposive sampling technique. This study was conducted from January to April 2020. The data were collected though observation, interviews, field notes, and documentation. The data analysis used the interactive analysis form Miles and Huberman. The result shows that the innovation of blended learning in sosmed-based active English class which used the Communicative Approach integrated e-learning platforms of Be-Smart, Zoom, and Google Classroom with social media (YouTube, Instagram, Facebook) could improve active English skill of the students in Covid19 pandemic. This can be seen from the students' activeness and self-confidence, creativity and innovation in producing and uploading the videos of English practice because they need a number of likes, views, and subscribers so it could naturally motivate them to do their best in order to improve their motivation and active English skill.

In today’s neoliberal economy, digital platforms have led to a proliferation in science popularization where scientists package their messages for the wider public. Our study explores how science ideas are disseminated in one of the most widespread digitally mediated genres of science popularisation, the TED talks. We adopt a multimodal discourse analysis approach to explore how the presenter orchestrates her speech, visuals on slides, and hand gestures to achieve the communicative purposes of the TED talk. From the analysis, it is observed that the presenter uses many specific linguistic choices to clarify the ideas and build the speaker’s authority. These language choices are supported by visual choices and gestures. We unpack the presenter’s multimodal semiotic choices and examine how they work together to communicate scientific ideas to the layman and engage with the audience. Our study reveals a deeper understanding on the power of language, visuals, and gestures as communicative tools in presentations, and sheds light on how the three modes are orchestrated to present scientific ideas in an accessible and engaging manner as part of science popularization.
