Pathology of Spontaneous and Experimental Infection of North American Wild Ruminants withMycobacterium paratuberculosis

Abstract: Spontaneous paratuberculosis was studied in free-ranging and captive bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis), and Rocky Mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus). Lesions of paratuberculosis in these species resembled the disease in domestic sheep and goats. Mycobacterium paratuberculosis cultured from bighorn sheep was used to orally infect bighorn x mouflon (Ovis musimon) hybrid sheep, elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Clinical paratuberculosis … Show more

“…4,31 Focal necrosis and mineralization, although rare in bovines, has been frequently reported in paratuberculosis lesions in the small ruminants with or without parasitic infection. 37 The observation of caseation and Vet Pathol 43: 4,2006 necrosis in the intestine and lymph node of 1 buffalo indicated uncommonality of lesions in buffalo paratuberculosis. 31 Like Mycobacterium avium subsp.…”

“…12 Being a major domesticated ruminant in Asia, its importance with regard to control and eradication of paratuberculosis cannot be underestimated. Because buffaloes belong to a separate genus, Bubalus, the pathology of paratuberculosis infection in cattle 4,13,24,31 and other ruminants 5,10,16,25,26,28,34,37 is not likely to be similar. The objective of the present study was to describe the gross and histologic lesions of naturally occurring paratuberculosis in water buffaloes.…”

“…Additionally, spontaneous cases of Johne's disease have been found in many species of wild animals. In North America, M. paratuberculosis has been isolated from white-tailed deer (44,261), mule deer (322,323), bighorn sheep (322,323), Rocky Mountain goats (322,323), bison (28), and elk (323). Similarly, M. paratuberculosis has been found in wild red deer from the Italian Alps (220) and wild rabbits in Scotland (6,140,141).…”

“…Mesenteric lymph nodes are moderately large and oedematous. Focal necrosis and mineralisation of mesenteric and ileocecal lymph nodes can be present in all species with high prevalence in deer (Williams et al, 1983). The serosal lymphatic vessels of the involved jejunum and ileum are dilated and appeared beaded.…”
