Pathologic patterns of interleukin 10 expression – A review

Abstract: Interleukin 10 (IL-10) is important pleiotropic immunoregulatory cytokine which gene is located on chromosome 1 at 1q31-32. There are many genetic variants of IL-10 gene. However, the most studied are two dinucleotide repeats (microsatellites), IL10.G and IL10.R, located 1.2 kb and 4 kb upstream of the transcription start site and three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) -1082(G/A), -819(C/T) and -592(C/A). A large number of studies have shown that IL-10 gene polymorphisms are associated with different dis… Show more

“…These results are consistent with the positive association between IL-8 levels and neutrophil counts found in sputum (28) and in blood [14]. However, we found no association between "pro-inflammatory cytokine profile" and blood eosinophil counts or total IgE level, in contrast with previous studies on IL-5 and IL-13 in sputum (18,(29)(30)(31). The "proinflammatory cytokine profile" was not correlated with asthma control outcomes, allergic diseases, and lung function.…”

“…Additionally, this panel included two cytokines that are less often investigated in asthma [12]: Interleukin (IL)-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), an antagonist of IL-1 with antiinflammatory activity [17], and IL-10 able to inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokine synthesis [18,19].…”

“…Dysregulated IL-10 production/expression has been reported in multiple autoimmune conditions, including psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease [41]. Studies have shown that IL-10 knock-out mice spontaneously develop enterocolitis, resembling inflammatory bowel diseases [42].…”

“…This pathway therefore provides an explanation to the decreased level of miR-410 and the elevated serum IL-10 observed in patients with SLE [37]. Over-expression of IL-10 has been implicated in SLE development through inducing the production of autoantibodies by B cells [38]. Overall, regarding aberrant cytokine and chemokine releases, the increased expression of miR-524-5p and decreased expression of miR-125a, miR-142-3p/5p, miR-410, miR-31 and miR-21 could contribute to the increased IFN-g, IL-10 and RANTES, as well as the decreased IL-2 secretion in SLE T cells (Fig.…”
